Subject: Prayer and Evangelism |
Bible Note: “In his first letter to Timothy, the apostle Paul gives guidance to leaders concerning the structure, administration, and function of the Early Church. After a brief section warning against false teachings (chap. 1), Paul begins chapter 2 with instruction to Timothy. Notice that prayer is at the top of the list. Paul says, ‘I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone’ (2:1). Paul’s first instruction on how the Church is to function is that it must be a praying Church. Verses 3-4 tell us that prayer has a purpose: first, it pleases God our Savior, and second, it works in conjunction with God’s will that all should be saved. These verses contain a definite sense that we pray for others – including those in his position – so that they might be saved and ‘come to a knowledge of the truth’ (v. 4). The focus of prayer is that they will encounter the ‘mediator’ who is ‘the man Christ Jesus’ (v. 5). Paul was appointed to be an apostle for the purpose of spreading the testimony about Jesus. This purpose begins in prayer. When we pray for non-Christian people in this way, we have faith that God hears our prayer and is working through His Holy Spirit to reach out to those people. In the Wesleyan-Holiness movement, we call this ‘prevenient grace.’ We can therefore pray with confidence, believing that God is already at work in the lives our unsaved friends, family, and neighbors.” Source: Faith Connections Youth Teacher Guide for June-August 2006 (Word Action Publishing), pg. 16.
