Bible Note: Scripture ... Act 2:17-18, 18:26, 21:9; Rom 16:1, 13; Gal 3:26-29; Eph 4:11, 5:22-24; Col 3:18; 1 Cor 11:3-16, 14:34-35; 1 Tim 2:9-15, 3:1-7; Tit 1:5-11, 2:3-4; 2Jo 1:1, 13 ... yayatheresa, greetings and welcome to the forum, If you read my post 127994 .... I have given some insight. The passage Timothy could be either her husband or all men. The passage in Ephesians leans towards the husband only and in 1 Corinthinians it can be all me. You are correct that the Bible wasn't written for a culrure or time ... else we can pick and choose what we want to follow. Authenteo is the Greek word for ursurp (exercise in the NAS). It means one who acts on his own authority or to govern, exercise dominion over one. It is from autos (the same) and an obsolete hentes (a worker). Be careful when looking up the English meaning. I don't think Diana was the reason ... I think the culture was changing where women wanted more or eqaul rights. The strict 'women in silence" doctrine may be some place ... but, we need to read the Bible carefully to see if they are to be slient. The context (1 Cor 14) of the passage (vv 34-35) is prophecy and speaking in tongues. Therefore, women can sing. Titus 2:3-5 says the older women are to teach younger women. One could choose to be a Nazarite (Num 6:2), but I am not sure a prophetess ... that is a calling of God. Deborah was a prophetess and judge (Judges 4:4), but I don't think it is the basis for women to be prophets today. Priscilla did teach Apollos with Aquila .. but that again is an unique situation ... he was in their home. It was 2-to-1 ... nit 1 or 2 to many. Just some more thoughts. Searcher |
