NASB | Romans 8:13 for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Romans 8:13 for if you are living according to the [impulses of the] flesh, you are going to die. But if [you are living] by the [power of the Holy] Spirit you are habitually putting to death the sinful deeds of the body, you will [really] live forever. |
Bible Question: Thank you WalkingTalkingBible!I am so unknowledgeable. Can you please tell me what happens when you are filled with the holy spirit? Do you know it? Is it different from when we are praying or worshipping and we feel the holy spirit? My pastor talked a little about this one time but, I don't really understand it very well. One last question,(sorry)when God fills you with his holy spirit do you continue to have it or do you have to keep praying for it? Thank you! |
Bible Answer: I do not think you can say what will happen when you are full of the Spirit because God is sovereign and different things happened in the Bible, but gifts and other manifestations often occured. In Acts 1:5 Jesus tells them of the promise of the BAPTISM of the Spirit, but when we get to Acts 2:4 it uses different terminology saying they were FILLED with the Spirit, although I think this was the same event. 1 Cor 12:13 says: "For by one Spirit we were ALL baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit." The preposition is the same as Acts 1 "en", no difference between "in", "with", "of" or "by" in the Greek. In Acts, three times when people RECEIVED the Spirit they spoke in tongues, 2 times they did not. It was definitely a sign to the JEWS because it reads: 1 Cor 14:21 In the Law it is written, "By men of strange tongues and by the lips of strangers I will speak to this people, and even so they will not listen to Me," says the Lord. 1 Cor 14:22 So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophecy is for a sign, not to unbelievers but to those who believe. But that does not make it a sign to Gentiles OR believing Jews! 1Cor 12 and 14 demonstrate the diversity of what may happen with people full of His Spirit. But on Pentecost, some people thought they were BABBLING, others said: "we hear them in our own tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God." (Praising!) The Gospel was not preached until Peter stood up and spoke, probably in Hebrew (which they all likely understood). I do not doubt that you could be experiencing the filling of the Holy Spirit while praising God and worshipping Him. But keep in mind, as C.S. Lewis once pointed out, that your "feelings" are the reaction of your flesh to a stimuli, and your flesh has a limited variety of responses and may react similarly to other stimuli as well. Enjoy the feelings! But don't let them distract you from the focus of your worship, Jesus Himself. And don't rely on them, because God is as powerfully present with you with or without them. I know that some have witnessed for Jesus and not realized how much the Spirit was on them until well after the fact because the Spirit may increase your focus to the task He has given you to that extent. Rom 8:9 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. Ezek 36:26 "Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. Ezek 36:27 "I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances. Eph 5:18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, God Bless! dab |
