Subject: Is this about water baptism at all? |
Bible Note: Sniper: I think your testimony is really neat! In the winter of 1987,I pastor of an 100 year old small church. The baptistry was so badly in need of repair it would not hold water any longer. I had a young man who wanted to be baptized. I arranged with a church about 20 miles away to use theirs in the evening service. It so happened the pastor asked me to speak that evening as well, which I gladly accepted. That evening when it came time for the baptismal service, I walked down into the water and had the shock of my life. Someone filled the baptistry but forgot to start the water heater. The water was like ice! My breath was taken away. My chin was shaking it was so cold! The baptism went on, the young man came down and was more shocked than I was. By now the congregation knew the problem. We did the baptism. I am sure it was done in expediant order, and we walked out in shivers. Now as Paul harvey says "the rest of the story"! I always baptized in a nice older dress pants and shirt and tie, no waders for me, that is sissy stuff, right? Well when I packed my change of clothes I forgot something. Guess what? A dry pair of pants! I did not find my mistake untill I reached for the pants in the bag I packed. If I was not preaching that evening then I could have done something else, like make a quick run home and return. So I hand rung the pants out as best I could. I went out on the platform and sat down next to the other pastor hoping no one would notice. By God's mercy no one noticed. Thank goodness for wrinkel free pants. I preached a regular message with freezing cold legs. When we finally got home I was freezing bone cold. I never made that mistake again! I should mention it was below freezing outside, with snow on the ground. That ment the water was really cold going into the baptistry. So that was a real learning experience! First always re check to makesure you have a complete change of clothes. Second feel the water before the service begins. Third learn to laugh at your mistakes. I agree there is always water to find, but make sure the temp is above 40 degrees. Blessings and peace. justme |
