NASB | Acts 2:38 Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Acts 2:38 And Peter said to them, "Repent [change your old way of thinking, turn from your sinful ways, accept and follow Jesus as the Messiah] and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ because of the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. |
Subject: Is this about water baptism at all? |
Bible Note: I agree with you. The language used by Peter indicates that the gift of the indwelling spirit FOLLOWS repentance and 'baptism', whatever that baptism is. It would be pretty confusing to interpret Peter's word in the following way: "Be baptized (an imperative, command) with the Holy Spirit AND you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." Baptism into Christ, which is a burial with Christ (Colossians 2:12; Rom 6:3-5), when obeyed in faith, brings forgiveness. Therefore the sanctified vessel is prepared to receive the indwelling Spirit. The most likely baptism in Acts 2:38 is water baptism. Good day. |
