Subject: When does the Baptism occur? |
Bible Note: Hi Makarios, I believe that we are indwelt by the Holy Spirit at the time of our initial faith in Christ, but we are filled with and baptized in the holy spirit all through our lives with Christ. I don't remember how much you and I have talked about this passage of John 7:37-39. In fact I may have changed my interpretation of it since we may have last talked of it. Here is my rendering of it with stars at the places of differing capitalization: John 7:37, "Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If any man is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, 'From *His innermost being shall flow rivers of living water.' But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the *spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified." I capitalized the "His" and put in lower case the "spirit" because the verses speak of those contrasts. He spoke of the Spirit, that is, "From His innermost being..." He spoke of the Spirit, that is, "for the spirit was not yet..." When you study the Holy Spirit be aware that it may not be speaking of the Person. I believe because of my personal study of the Scripture that the nine times that our NAS and NKJ speaks of "filled with the Holy Spirit" that holy spirit should be in lower case. Also Exodus 28:3 and Ephesians 5:18. I believe that Acts 13:52 should be rendered: "And the disciples were continually filled with joy and with the holy spirit." Acts 6:3, "But select from among you, brethren, seven men of good reputation, full of the spirit and of wisdom..." Acts 6:5, "...and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the holy spirit..." And Stephen, full of grace and power, was performing great wonders and signs among the people." I also believe that Acts 10:38 should be rendered: "You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the holy spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good..." When you keep this possibility in mind and apply it to the Scriptures then some more understanding can be achieved. At least it makes sense in my mind. From the heart, Ray |
