Bible Note: (continued) In another instance, Christ rejects the other authorities of men: He answered and said to them, "Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: 'This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.' "For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men; the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do." He said to them, "All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition. (Mark 7:6-9) We are warned in Scripture to not amend or change what God has said: Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him. Do not add to His words, Lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar. (Proverbs 30:5-6); "For I (Jesus) testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book." (Revelation 22:18-19) "He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him; the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day." (John 12:48) "You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me." (John 5:39) Now, lest I leave you with any notion that sola scriptura is a Reformation invention, let me quote Saint Augustine of Hippo. He wrote this about 11 centuries before the Reformation: "This Mediator (Jesus Christ), having spoken what He judged sufficient first by the prophets, then by His own lips, and afterwards by the apostles, has besides produced the Scripture which is called canonical, which has Paramount Authority, and to which we yield assent in all matters of which we ought not to be ignorant, and yet cannot know of ourselves." From the very beginning of the history of the church after the Apostles, with the writings of those known as the Apostolic Fathers (Ignatius, Polycarp, Clement, the Didache, and Barnabus) there is exclusive appeal to the Scriptures for teaching of sound doctrine and for defense against heresy. The writings of these men exude the spirit of the Scriptures. We see the same thing in the writings of the apologists Justin Martyr and Athenagoras. None of them appealed to any other authority than the Scriptures. I hope that this sheds a bit of light on this phrase for you. In Him, Doc |
