Bible Note: Janae, dear sister, let's be candid and forthright. Are the questions that Kalos asked you, and that I asked you on this same thread, truly trick questions or are they not, instead, questions for which you can produce no genuine biblical foundation? Surely you don't think that anyone is trying to trick you by asking you to substantiate your assertions with solid chapter-and-verse evidence from God's word. I'm not meaning to be disrespectful or unkind to you or to belittle you in any way when I say that your feelings, experiences or church practices simply lack the authority of Scripture. If you base what you believe and practice squarely on the authority and clear teaching of Scripture, why then should you ever feel threatened when you are asked to "always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear." (1 Peter 3:15b). If you are not ready and therefore are unable to defend your position by Scripture instead of citing strictly (subjective) personal feelings and experiences, perhaps it is better that you refrain from making sweeping theological statements until you are ready. Anyone can come on this Forum -- or any where else -- and state what he believes based on what he feels and presumes to experience. But that is not rightly dividing the word of truth (2 Tim. 2:15) -- and rightly dividing the word of truth is what this Forum is all about. Or is designed to be and should be. If you are right in what you assert, Scripture will prove no challenge to your being able to make a clear biblically-based defense. If, on the other, should you face overwhelming difficulty in building a solid scriptural foundation to support your assertions, it would be most wise to rethink you assertions very carefully. In fact, it is always better to study Scripture first and then form our beliefs instead of forming our beliefs first and then trying to find a passage or two in Scripture that, with a little nudging, looks as if it possibly could be made to support our beliefs in some way or the other. --Hank |
