Bible Note: Janae: I always like hearing from you, too. The Pentecostal teaching on anointing and being anointed is something with which I am very familiar. Since 1959 I have been a member of one of the largest Pentecostal denominations in this country. So I've heard it all, as far as what Pentecostals believe on this subject. What I still haven't heard is Scriptural evidence to back up their assertions. The New Testament has much to say about "filled with the Spirit." But where in the NT does it actually SAY that the anointing is THE SAME THING as being filled with the Spirit? I'm not aware of any verse that contains both "filled with the Spirit" and "anointed" or "anointing." "You [referring to all believers] have an anointing from the Holy One" (1 John 2:20, NIV). This is the only sense in which the term is used (apart from Christ) in the New Testament. This verse, although it talks about believers having an anointing, says nothing about "filled with the Spirit."
