Bible Question: what about Elijh didn't he go to heaven without dying? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Callie! 2 Kings 2:1-11 details this final great episode in the the life of Elijah. The only problem is that when we read the English word 'heaven', we think of it in terms of our modern word along with all of it's theological meaning. However, the Old Testament word 'heaven' simply doesn't possess all of that meaning. It simply refers to the skies. Elijah was taken up into the air in a flaming chariot, and out of Elisha's sight. Now, we know from the New Testament that no one was in 'Heaven' (as we think on the term) until after the resurrection of Christ. Until then, everyone simply went to Hades. For instance, see the account of Lazarus and the Rich Man, where both went to Hades. It was not until after the resurrection of Christ that believers are now enabled to go immediately to be with the Lord. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
