Bible Note: Greetings Rowdy! Thanks for the attempt to clarify! I think it is the 'but' that you add which is causing the problem! :-) His grace saves us regardless - no 'buts'! A Christian 'ought' to do many things, but they are not saved on the basis of their sucess or failure at doing those things (works); rather, they are saved by grace alone. For instance, you said: "But I'm convinced like you that we can't possibly earn our way to Heaven but I'm also convinced we can't go to Heaven unless we've done everything in our power and truly gave it our best effort to be fruitful and productive in the Lord's vineyard, His church here on earth." This is a contradiction. If we must 'do' everything in our power, then we must 'earn' salvation. As Paul said in Romans 4, if it is of 'works' then it is no longer of grace.
