Bible Question:
Scripture ... Mat 24:15 ... Dan 11:2-12:13, 2Th 2:4, Rev 13:14-15 - ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION Read Dan 11:2-12:13 ... stop at 11:31 and 12:11 "From the time that the regular sacrifice is abolished and the abomination of desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days." I see a smooth talker, two kings and 1,290 days. Who were these and when did it happen? |
Bible Answer: Searcher, thanks for making my day. Your legitimate questions WILL be answered. I look forward to review some of my “old” material gathered over the years. My personal library, its numerous book shelves crammed with overflowing (the excess are stacked by chairs, my desk, under the desk), will get a well deserved “going over”. Matthew 24:15 says a lot about our topic. Plus, the little phrase added by Matthew, “let the reader understand” needs to be heeded. The “reader” includes you and me, right? The one mentioned in Daniel 11:31 and 12:11, the disciples KNEW had been already fulfilled. And the reader needs to understand ALL that Jesus referred to concerning Daniel’s prophecies, if we are to understand WHICH one of the two separate abominations was referred to by Jesus. Daniel 9:26-27 explains. This speaks of the one AFTER Christ, seeing His followers understood the fulfillment of Dan 11-12 in which the first king from the south (Egypt) – according to history – Anticohus Epiphanes was the “second king” from the north (Syria). Just like Daniel said, the Northern king would “perform abominations”. He gave himself his surrname, and it means "the God made manafest". Did you notice the "anti" in his first name? When did did Daniel's happen? According to HIS-story it happened EXACTLY as Daniel predicted during the reign of Anticochus (174-168 B.C.). You can read all about it yourself in any one of many sources. 1st Maccabees for instance, is most likely the source the apostles had about that. Contrary to Scofield’s Bible (1917 edition) which only renders Dan 11:31 to Antiochus, Josephus indicates BOTH 11 and 12 to that wicked king. So WHEN was Jesus’ prophecies, about the abomination (Matt. Mark. Luke. Rev.), fulfilled? It WAS FULFILLED during the time the Roman army surrounded Jerusalem, took the city, entered the temple with THEIR objects of worship and offered THEIR sacrifices upon the altar. That is when. For the best details that Historians have provided, read the “WARS of the Jews, by Josephus. It’s pages follow the predictions to the letter. Famines, earthquakes, etc. Many Bible encyclopedias, Eusebius, Barnes Commentary (which tells us HOW the Roman army fulfills Luke 21:20), Jamison, Fausset and Brown Commentary gives the same data about Mark 13. And the lists go on and on. Respectfully yours, Taleb |
