Bible Question: Chapter 24 of Matthew seems to be talking about an event in the future. (24:6,7 24:9 24:14 24:22 24:30) It seems that the sacrilegious object that causes desecration will be set up in Jeruselem in the future, then great calamity will come.(24:22 24:29) After the heavenly signs the lord will return. Does anyone have any ideas on this chapter? I've been taught that it covers two different time periods but I can't see it that way. Thanks for any comments. Terry |
Bible Answer: Jesus did not say these things in Mat 24 so that we would know the when, where and the who. These are words of encouragement pointing out that He, God, is in charge of this world and things will go just like He says. We must be careful not to get so involved with His words that we don’t hear what He is saying to us. Prov 3: 5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Never rely on what you think you know. 6 Remember the Lord in everything you do, and he will show you the right way. Haggai 2:4 But now don't be discouraged, any of you. Do the work, for I am with you. 5 When you came out of Egypt, I promised that I would always be with you. I am still with you, so do not be afraid. 6 "Before long I will shake heaven and earth, land and sea. 7 I will overthrow all the nations, and their treasures will be brought here, and the Temple will be filled with wealth. 8 All the silver and gold of the world is mine. 9 The new Temple will be more splendid than the old one, and there I will give my people prosperity and peace." The Lord Almighty has spoken. Heb 12:25 Be careful, then, and do not refuse to hear him who speaks. Those who refused to hear the one who gave the divine message on earth did not escape. How much less shall we escape, then, if we turn away from the one who speaks from heaven! 26 His voice shook the earth at that time, but now he has promised, "I will once more shake not only the earth but heaven as well." 27 The words "once more" plainly show that the created things will be shaken and removed, so that the things that cannot be shaken will remain. 28 Let us be thankful, then, because we receive a kingdom that cannot be shaken. Let us be grateful and worship God in a way that will please him, with reverence and awe; 29 because our God is indeed a destroying fire. 2 Tim 3:14 But as for you, continue in the truths that you were taught and firmly believe. You know who your teachers were, 15 and you remember that ever since you were a child, you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching the truth, rebuking error, correcting faults, and giving instruction for right living, 17 so that the person who serves God may be fully qualified and equipped to do every kind of good deed. philemcc |
