Subject: Does God endorse polygamy? |
Bible Note: Greetings Don! The only problem is my friend that the portion you left out made the quote appear as if it were saying that polyomy was normal in the early church, or at least normal for the laymen in contrast to the clergy. What's worse is that the quote doesn't even make the point that you claimed anyway. Your quote says: "As in 1Ti 5:9, "wife of one man," IMPLIES A WOMAN MARRIED BUT ONCE; so "husband of one wife" here MUST MEAN THE SAME." So, the commentators agree that both passages mean the same thing "married but once". The only point they are making is that the same 'married but once' standard may not have applied to everyone. However, they do agree that the 'one wife' phrase means that the man could only be married once, and that it was not just a reference to the 'first' wife as you have claimed. We must be very careful when we quote someone to accurately portray their meaning. Well, I've a fussy grandbaby on my hands right now, so I must depart! :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
