figgy - If debates you enjoy and if you are speaking particularly of Calvinism/Arminianism debates, then by all means enjoy yourself to the uttermost by using Search and entering the word Calvinism. You weren't around during the Calvinism/Arminianism Wars, but we old-timers were, and we don't wish to see more wars of this magnitude on this forum. Messy and disruptive they were and didn't solve a thing. Both sides claimed victory but nobody really won and the forum itself was the loser. .... Besides, it's more fun and as spiritually edifying to watch a good game of baseball. Unlike the debates, in baseball we know that one side will win. In the C/A debates we know in advance that neither side will win, though both may claim victory. What we do know is that sparks will fly, feelings will be hurt, and that the wall that divides the two camps will be raised even higher. Meanwhile the secular world looks on in amazement at the spectacle, wondering how professed followers of Christ and Christianity could war with each other so vigorously and viciously. And the baby Christian is equally dismayed. Coming to the StudyBibleForum for spiritual nourishment so vital to his growth, he finds, and doubtlessly is perplexed to find, so great a schism in the body of Christ. --Hank

Hi Hank- Thanks for your response. I should start off telling you that I hate baseball:) I do see your point of view and think that you make some valid points. With all due respect (and I do respect your opinions) I guess my thinking is this - debates can be good if those involved debate correctly. It sounds as if this hasn't been the case in the past. However, as long as those involved adhere to the rules of the game then the debate should go on. This is a public forum and regardless of anyone's dislike of the topic, individuals should have the right to converse about it if they wish. In the same manner, those who do not like the topic have the right not to participate. Maybe I am off base here since I haven't been through the past "bloodshed" but this topic does interest me and I am hopeful that it can be discussed in the right spirit. Just my opinion:) God Bless, Elaine |

Elaine - Please refresh your understanding of the purpose of StudyBibleForum by clicking on "About the Forum" from the sidebar menu at the left of the home page screen. The forum was never designed to be a discussion platform for debating denominational issues or promoting denominational bias. --Hank

Hi Hank- I would disagree that a healthy debate about C/A violates any rules put forth on this forum. However, I really am not interested in winning an argument here. I just wanted it to be known that not everyone is turned off by the topic. I think that the discussion can be fruitful. It looks like we are the only ones currently posting anything on this thread anyway so perhaps the whole thing is over. I just wanted to voice my opinion on the topic and that is all I really want to say. Perhaps we will chat on other issues:) God Bless, Elaine |

Elaine Do a search and see for yourself. Debates on this subject were anything but fruitful. Many were hurt and left the forum when the debaters started attacking each other out of frustration. We lost many very knowledgeable people that had been very productive resources for the forum. This forum because it is un-moderated has a tendency to get out of hand very quickly and is simply the wrong vehicle to try to host a debate. Please do some searches and see the results of the last C/A debates. EdB |
