Greetings Joe! Abraham's willingness to sacrifice Isaac is a particularly good example of what you are saying. The trip to the mountain took several days, if I recall correctly. It was his faith that caused him to make the journey. It was his faith that gave him the assurance that both he and his son would be coming back down the mountain. His faith didn't appear after the fact! :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Exactly. And you know as well as I that it takes careful study of Scripture not to jump to false conclusions. Faith in Jesus Christ and works are inseparably united, but to consider them the same thing is error. One group tends to go to one extreme, saying that works are faith, while another rejects any theology which even mentions works at all. Same with baptism. Some see it as what justifies individuals. Others see it as a nice "extra" or an empty symbol or picture. It is none of these things. --Joe! |

Greetings Joe! Agreed my friend! I know that I tend to argue against the first option so much, that some probably think that I fall into the second category. But, I don,t! My concern has always been that too many of us Arminians tend to fall over into the 'I earn my salvation camp'. You Calvinist's are lucking in that regard! ;-) But, I have actually talked to people who thought that once they accepted Christ, then say told a lie, that they were now lost. I have spent many years trying to preach that we do not earn our salvation in the first place, neither can we lose it based upon a failure to live up to God's commands. That is what area which I think we are in complete agreement. Too many Arminians really do see to have the daisy as their flower! :-( With all due respects to my friends on the forum who differ on this with me, I really do see this teaching as 'another' gospel, in the same way that the Judaizers was another gospel. They both used exactly the same arugments to support their position that we must do something to be saved. Oh, well! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Well, we on the other side have to remember that we are not justified by election, that our justification is conditioned upon our faith. And I think that all believers (especially myself) need to remember that at no point in our Christian lives do we need to look at our obedience (or lack thereof) as the basis of our right standing with God. It is so easy to fall into the trap of looking at our sin and despair, thinking that somehow God is now looking at our performance as what will get us into heaven, rather than the obedience of His Son on our behalf. I do see my baptism as a sign and seal of God's promise to me. How gracious of God to give our weak selves visible signs in water and bread and cup to point to His grace. --Joe! |
