1 | How Does Baptism Save? | 1 Pet 3:21 | CDBJ | 75526
Greetings srprimeaux, and welcome to the forum. You almost make it sound like you have put all your faith and trust in Jesus Christ and what he did for your salvation instead of trusting a little bit in some thing that you did, like baptism. I’m just pulling your chain you have it right and stick to it. You seem pretty sound for only having known the Lord for five years. You will run into many different types on this forum and not all are saved by biblical standards. Don’t let any sway you from a solid undivided faith in Jesus and you will fair out well. Matthew 7:21-23 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. Notice in verse 21; but he that doeth the will of my Father? People are always trying to explain what the will of God is and the works we should be doing in order to have salvation; such things like baptism, keeping the law etc. you name it. Jesus tells us very plainly the work that the Father wants us to do, and none of the assumed human efforts are listed. There was a well-meaning group that assumed they had to do something to be recognized in God’s eyes so they ask Jesus a question. John 6:28-29 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? 29Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. No baptism, no law, no self-righteousness, Jesus is saying in effect God doesn’t need your help to save you all you need to do is get your thinking straight and completely trust in the one God sent, His Son. With a plan like that Jesus gets all the credit and we can take none of the credit ourselves because of something we did. Have a nice Day, CDBJ |

A person is saved by faith, but read James 2:24. This is the only place in the Bible that you will find the words faith and alone together. "Not by faith alone" God must see our faith, otherwise it is a dead faith. You will understand this if take James chapter 2 at face value. Abraham was not due a favor for his works(Romans 4), thus his faith saved him. Abraham's faith would never had been known were it not for his works(James 2). We work(obey, heed, etc.) because we love God and have faith in Him, but we do not expect a payment for our work. We only are doing what a faithful servant should do.

Hi Sniper, I love it when people use that verse to try and prove there position on works but one needs to back up a little to keep it in context. James 2:22-24 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? 23And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. 24Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. Did you notice the word SEEST at the start of verse 22 then again in verse 24, YE SEE? The next time you get a chance measure out 3 cubic feet of faith and tell me what it weighs. Or better still, cut off a nice long piece and give us the measurement of how long it is, please don’t use metrics because a lot of us have trouble with that. Pretty soon you will realize that we cant fathom exactly what faith is all we can do is experience it’s results. I believe the Lord taught me a good illustration with regards to faith and works. It seems strange but it get the point across with the analogy. The illustration is that FAITH is to poison ivy, as WORKS are to scratching. Example, If you have true faith in Jesus Christ, it will manifest it's self outwardly. Just like the one that has poison ivy, they are going to scratch, they can't help it, it’s the nature of the dumb stuff. If you have poison ivy on you, you just can’t help it, you’re going to scratch; I’m speaking from experience! Now let say that a person DOESN"T have poison ivy, they could scratch till they look lobster red, yet all of that useless scratching isn’t going to give them poison ivy. They have to come in contact with the vine to get it. The vine in this illustration would be Jesus and faith in him. People can go through all the motions and do all the things that a true believer dose and make all of the proper noises but they are still not under the influence of the one who causes the works to come out of the believer in the first place; they are pseudo believers and there will come a day when the Lord will say I never knew you. The verse that says faith with out works is dead it true because if one has the faith the works will manifest themselves by the fruit that is producing. But there again Jesus said in John 10:14 I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. Luke 8:10 And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand. I must confess I am not sure why you pointed out the "you sees". I do know that if there are no works then there is no faith. The only way to see faith is through works. Belief is not enough for salvation. Obedience through faith must also be present. If a person has been baptized for the remission of sin, and has works in keeping with repentence, then I will not call them a pseudo- beliver.

Hi sniper, the “You see” is for our benefit not God’s; he knows if a person has the proper faith, we don’t know unless we see something that exhibits the fact. From your post it sounds like you are putting a lot of emphasis on baptism. Which came first complete trust in Jesus work, as payment for our sin, or the baptism, and what happens if the person drops over dead before they had a chance to be baptized after they believe? Don’t get the cart before the horse, notice the prerequisite for baptism. Acts 8:36 B See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? Another way to put it is, is there any reason why I shouldn’t be baptized. The next verse shows what must precede baptism. Acts 8:37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. The eunuch came up with the right answer so Philip baptized him. A lot of people are trusting in their baptism with water to help save them and Jesus doesn’t like to share the praise with someone’s assumptions. Have a nice day, CDBJ |

HI CDBJ, I don't think anyone is saying that you get baptized and then you believe. The eunuch had to believe before he could be baptized. But why was he so interested in being baptized? Because it is connected to the new birth. The eunuch came up with the right answer, but it's not the answer you give. He didn't say that he was already saved. You say that a lot of people are trusting in their baptism to help save them. Can you point to one person who trust in baptism to save them? The only one I can think of who trust in baptism to save is one who believes in infant baptism--obviously, the infant has no faith in God. When you bring up hypotheticals, like 'what if he died before he was baptized?', you inadvertantly nullify Jesus' command that we be bapized. Jesus commanded that we be baptized. And the reason He gave is 'for remission of sins.' I hope that helps. Good day. |
