Friends of the Forum: Out of protest and sheer frustration, I have decided to dispose, quietly but promptly, of the five editions of the New International Version that I own. The trend that Zondervan and its parent company, HarperCollins, seem to be taking is one that grieves my spirit and I cannot endorse any part of it; the promise they made the evangelical community to scrap their former plans to produce a gender-neutral translation has been broken; their claim to biblical accuracy is questionable to say the very least. Accordingly, the NIV and its newer sister publication, the TNIV, are versions I no longer will use nor recommend. --Hank

Hello, NASB and ESV! Hank: Regarding your decision to dispose of your copies of the NIV. It saddens me to say this, but I am seriously considering doing the same -- not because of any perceived weakness in the original NIV, but as a protest against the TNIV. At this time I have removed every edition of the NIV from my bookshelves and have put them away out of sight. I may take it a step further and remove all of them from my house. Even though the NIV is the pew Bible in use at my local church, I will not be reading or even touching the NIV while in church. I am still shocked and feeling betrayed to see the publishers (both the Bible society and Zondervan) dancing to the tune of political correctness. NASB yes! NIV no! kalos |

Way back I heard bad things about how NIV was translated and didn't want anything to do w/it. We use NKJ Bibles for pew Bibles but Sun Sch uses NIV for kids, that didn't make sense to me. They give all the kids a NIV when they go into first grade. I think if NKJ is pew Bible, it should be SS Bible too. Kids bring their Bibles to church and can't follow the reading. I like NKJ too.

Norrie: Always good to hear from you. Thanks for your input. :-) I reiterate: Regarding the decision to dispose of your copies of the NIV. It saddens me to say this, but I am seriously considering doing the same -- NOT BECAUSE OF ANY PERCEIVED WEAKNESS IN THE ORIGINAL NIV, but as a protest against the TNIV. Grace and peace to you, kalos |

If you feel you MUST protest (?) to/against a company that couldn't care less (except for the profit margin), why not DONATE your NIV's to folks who would be just happy to receive a bible to read..?? God never instructed us to read the NIV, NASB, KJV, NKJV, NLT, GoodNewsBible, TEV, Amplified, RVS, ESV or any other version/translaton. He simply wants us to share His word with all the unsaved....just PLANT the SEED and let God take care of the rest. It seems we all get soooooo carried away with types of bibles (study, pew use, general reading, etc.), that we forget the real simplicity regarding God's plan for salvation, that it unfortunately gets "LOST" in the "TRANSLATION" (pun intended!). Forget the PHD's and other self proclaimed "experts" on biblical language, and get back to the BASICS of saving lost souls. There will be long lines at Heaven's gates with many of those same "experts" who will no doubt still be debating, oblivious of the fact that some of them in the "me,me,me,me--I'm right and your not" group, forgot to "get saved" themselves. If you can find God's plan of Salvation in ANY bible, and are able to explain it to any age group that is willing and able to understand it..who cares what company you got it from or what version or translation you are reading from!! It has been said that many of these so called "religious experts" are soooooo heavenly minded that thay they are no earthly good." So if your favorite Bible...yes even the much maligned New Living Translation is what it takes to put a soul in God's column, for crying out loud just "DO IT!!!" God will do the REST! |
