DarcyA Stop and think for a minute do you really think Paul was saying we all should be idiots? Or do you think Paul was saying that he didn't want his ministry to the Colossians to be effect by what he knew about the people. EdB |

EdB That isn't what I was saying, I do think However, That a guy can go to School for 12 years get his Dr. and still no absolutly nothing. You can have a guy who loves the Word of God and study for 6 months and he will know awhole lot more about the scripture than the person who went to school for 12 years for educational purposes. | ||||||

DarcyA Your right there are many educated idiots in this world. But your assertion that someone can read the Bible for 6 months and know more than a person that has a doctorate in theology is incorrect. The one that studied the Bible for 6 months may be better able to apply what he knows, he may be a better Christian but he simply doesn’t know more unless the other person bought his degree. Education is a treasure, one that should be sought after by all, however education is not a substitute for a genuine longing for the Lord, or being lead of the Holy Spirit. God told us to get educated. Paul wrote in scripture to study to show yourself approved. To scoff at education is not the answer the answer is to get an education. EdB |

I'm not putting down education. I am going to be going to a Bible school but thats not my point. I do not claim I know much about the Bible. People around me will say I do, because I got my nose in the Bible alot. I believe that only thing the school is going to do for me educational wise is give me some new insights. It is not going to be my main place where I learn God's Word. My personal Study sitting down with a Bible has been and always will be my main sorce of information. The School where I will be going is the same one that My pastor went to. Both of us can sit down and learn from each other. I learn just as much from him as he does me. That is how I believe the Bible tells us to learn. I don't believe the bible tells us to go out learn Hebrew/Greek and spend thousands of Dollars so you are qualified to teach. Which is the main reason I am going to go to school is to be "qualifed" Although I don't believe it should be that way but it is. Just a little personal thought something I have noticed the Dr. are very unteachable especcally learning from a layman. That is the trap the Educational system is setting up. If someone can go through School and is still teachable afterwards he has it made. But you rarely see that. And I am a firm Believer in order to teach you must be able to learn. |

DarcyA Most of what education has taught me is how much I didn't know. It opened new questions, new horizons, new interests. If we don't want to be taught then why do we think we should teach others. If you feel you learned everything you needed just by reading your Bible then you should not teach anyone nor should anyone listen to you, they should simply go to their Bible. The study of the original languages is because translation is a series of compromises. In our language we use one word to mean many things. In other languages especially Greek and Hebrew they may have 2, 5, 10 and even twenty words that mean slightly different things that would get translated as the same word in English. Without an understanding of the original or training on how to use translation tools a teacher would never be aware of these differences and the true meaning would not conveyed to the students. I hated language training, I hated it in high school, I hated in College it wasn’t until I got into the study of the Bible and of Greek and Hebrew that I understood how little I appreciated all that the languages held in our understanding of the Bible. Did it change the basic message? No! But it did yield a clearer understanding of what that message was. Once again cherish you time of study, don’t seek to show what you know seek to find out what you don’t know. EdB |

Ed, This might sound strange, but I find people who have the wrong belief in something in the bible is the most reliable sorse for me to find out the Truth, it gets you thinking and digging into the word. I think you nailed it on the head with this statement. "We don't want to be taught then why do we think we should teach others." The main problem I have with Schooling are these points. 1) Most churches will not Ordain anyone unless they spend thousands of Dollars in Education from a School of their chosing and courses. 2) People who spend years in Seminary (for the most part) End up being closed minded or prideful and will not listen to any teaching that goes against any false belief he may have especally the truth is given to him by a layman. It causes two problems 1 is pride the other is An unteachable will lead others astray hince some of the Cults out there today was started by an educated in the bible field men/woman. I have a very good learning circle around me. So I am very teachable. But I am also very careful in what I am being tought as well. If there is one small problem in what they are saying no matter how mute it seems to be I will always bring it up and work from there. You cannot do that at a college. I also don't mind being rebuked on a false belief I may have. As long as I am shown where I am wrong and why I am wrong and what is the correct thing. 2 out of those 3 will teach me. Another problem with colleges is if you know some belief is a little off on their part And then the exam or test comes up do you lie on the paper and tell them what they want to hear or do you mention the truth and fail? |

Greetings DarcyA! You wrote: "Another problem with colleges is if you know some belief is a little off on their part And then the exam or test comes up do you lie on the paper and tell them what they want to hear or do you mention the truth and fail?" I can honestly say that this was not the case at the college I attended. I took quite a few philosophy courses from a very well know Christian philosopher, with whom I strongly disagreed on many issues - publically. Yet, he never once gave me a bad grade as long as I defended my position. My other classes were much the same way. Yes, there were some classes where there was certain material that simply needed to be memorized. But, in all of my classes, the primary goal was to teach people how to think for themselves. In fact, most of our tests were essay tests for that very reason. I can't speak for other schools, but never once did I have to compromise my beliefs for a grade. :-) p.s. - In my experience, those without higher education are just as unteachable as those with it! ;-) Just read through this forum for examples. :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
