Greetings EdB! Methinks that you are giving 'Sola Scriptura' a bad rap! ;-) This doctrine does not say that we can make Scripture say anything that we want it to say. It simply says that Scripture is the only source for faith and practice - i.e. that neither you nor anyone else can force a teaching down my throat unless it is found in Scripture. ;-) Sola Scriptura is about submiting to the authority of God as revealed in His Word. It is not about 'deciding for myself' what I want to submit to! There are many things in Scripture that I wish I could take out! ;-) But, because I have submitted myself to God and His Word, I can't! Hi, Tim Moran! The problem with Sola Scriptura, as Ed was pointing out, is that you may be listening to Scripture but many are listening to other men and these are making up doctrines to suit their pockets and/or egos... they would take the skimpiest of passages (as Jesus' reference to the other fold) to build a whole culture about themselves (just check with Muslims who would gladly teach you about Abraham and the rightful descendant)... when Sola Scriptura removes the whole history of the Church (which includes all of the teachings of the original Twelve) we have a constant stream of remaking the Church of Christ into the church of (insert name here!)... God Bless! Angel |

Greetings Angel! The fact that many mis-handle the Word, does not make the Word wrong! ;-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Tim I don't think anyone is saying the word is wrong at least not me. What I'm saying is by insisting on Sola Scriptura many times we miss out on specific teaching delivered by the Apostles or those they directly discipled that may clarify a commonly disputed scripture. There are many issues where Scripture was not finite but the teachings of the disciples and early church fathers made in finite. Also many use Sola Scriptura as a type of certification to prove their take on scripture is the correct one, when in fact we know many scriptures that can be understood one two or even three ways. But again Sola Scriptura is not the issue of this thread. The thrust and I had hoped the bearing of this thread would be how do we reconcile our division into denominational separation to the many admonishments and commands to remain in unity and one accord? Also how do we justify often prevailing attitudes of borderline hatred and in some cases near open hostility over denominational differences and still claim to follow the commandment love your neighbor as you would love yourself? And I guess as a side issue to all of this does the world see denominationalism as hyprocritical? I wasn't after the issues that separate us but I wanted more feedback on how we justify our position on these questions. EdB |
