Bible Note: Tim "If we simply followed the rules of grammar, we would 'usually' only have one interpretation of a verse." Do you know any denomination, tradition, or organization that does not claim to adhere to the conditions of your statement? However the statement itself is not always true. There are many verses that clearly state a prohibition on something or gives an admonishment that should be followed but the argument arises over whether this is a universal prohibition/admonishment or is it just addressing a particular situation or social custom. I too could cite examples but like you said it would open a can of worms and take this discussion to the dumper in seconds. I think it might be naive to believe all denominational problems arise from an artificial attempt to change the meaning of words, or even proper exegesis. With the exception of one particular bent that tries to redefine words most others base their differences on the application of the passage. They claim it pertains to today's Christian or they claim it doesn't. EdB |
