Greetings Ed! I forgot to answer your first question. :-) No! I do not beleive that God intended for there to be many interpretations of a single verse. He said what He meant, and meant what He wrote! ;-) If we simply followed the rules of grammar, we would 'usually' only have one interpretation of a verse. I say 'usually' because there are a few verses that are so confusing that no one can say for certain what the verse means. Are problems result when we resort to artifical attempts to change the meaning of words so that we can make the verse mean what we want it to mean. I could cite some examples, but I don't want to open up that can of worms! :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Tim "If we simply followed the rules of grammar, we would 'usually' only have one interpretation of a verse." Do you know any denomination, tradition, or organization that does not claim to adhere to the conditions of your statement? However the statement itself is not always true. There are many verses that clearly state a prohibition on something or gives an admonishment that should be followed but the argument arises over whether this is a universal prohibition/admonishment or is it just addressing a particular situation or social custom. I too could cite examples but like you said it would open a can of worms and take this discussion to the dumper in seconds. I think it might be naive to believe all denominational problems arise from an artificial attempt to change the meaning of words, or even proper exegesis. With the exception of one particular bent that tries to redefine words most others base their differences on the application of the passage. They claim it pertains to today's Christian or they claim it doesn't. EdB |

Greetings Ed! I'm getting ready for work, so I must be brief! ;-) I may be naive, but I do believe that most of our doctrinal divisions are caused by not actually going by what Scripture says, but assuming that Scripture says something it does not. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Tim Your absolutely right and I didn't mean to imply anything different. But we both know those that assume, also swear by all that is holy that is in fact what scripture says or what God intended it to say. And since we have in arrogance declared that every man is capable to decide for himself what scripture says we have no recourse other than hang on and hope for the best. EdB |
