Tim Do you believe it was God's intent to have five, six or even a hundred different interpretations of a verse of Scripture? When Paul saw the various churches misinterpreting the word he didn't offer this as their right but called them back under his authority to accept the word as he understood it. Have we assumed something that is not ours to do? Even Luther realized the can of worms he opened, he complained that every ‘rube’ was making his own doctrine. He further complained when his own disciples started to do as he had done and set their own doctrine. Luther went to the point of saying if you don't take scripture the way I do you are in danger of hell's fire. The very position he resisted from Rome. Today in a church the denomination or Pastor sets the doctrine. If I attended a church for 30 years and a new pastor comes it with doctrine that conflicts mine, I'm given the choice accept it or move on. If I stay and fight I'm accused of not submitting to authority or causing a church split. Yet isn't that exactly what happened to start that denomination to begin with. Do you really believe God intended it to be like this? EdB |

Greetings Ed! I forgot to answer your first question. :-) No! I do not beleive that God intended for there to be many interpretations of a single verse. He said what He meant, and meant what He wrote! ;-) If we simply followed the rules of grammar, we would 'usually' only have one interpretation of a verse. I say 'usually' because there are a few verses that are so confusing that no one can say for certain what the verse means. Are problems result when we resort to artifical attempts to change the meaning of words so that we can make the verse mean what we want it to mean. I could cite some examples, but I don't want to open up that can of worms! :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
