Ed, just a short note on your question, and in it I don't presume to have a definitive answer, nor do I know anyone who does, sufficient to justify denominationalism. As divisive and oftentimes ugly as denominationalism can be, it is self-defeating to issue a call for unity at the expense of forfeiting or compromising clear and core Gospel truths. Still and all it appears that believers are much too prone to quibble and separate themselves from one another over what really amounts to issues that should be passed over as being non-essential or even trivial. We see ideas and theological dogmas argued and fussed over on this Forum that really are of minor consequence in the larger scheme of things. It is quite possible that God's canopy is larger than ours and thus is able to cover the minor differences that exist among us, and does so long as we get the fundamental and essential tenets of the faith right. Yet one appropriately may ask, "But how can we agree on what is fundamental and essential?" I'll step aside gracefully, Ed, and generously allow you come on stage and answer that! :-) --Hank

Hank I totally agree we shouldn't compromise to have unity. My question is, are the things that separate us into denominations really gospel truths or are they things Satan knew he could use to separate us and we have played into his hand? EdB |

Ed, well I wouldn't say that Gospel truths ever divide. Truth unifies I believe. But it is certain that Satan has his hand in the proceedings, given the staggering degree of division and diversity in what purports to be Christianity today. Lest we forget, Satan is still around, still going about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour, as Scripture says. And the schism seems to be waxing rather than waning: new sects are cropping up all the time. And it's easier for a skunk to admit he stinks than for a sect to admit it is teaching a false gospel. .... Yet with all the division we at least have religious freedom; and what we have, the religious freedom, is a thousand times better than having a one-world religion mandated by the state thrust upon us. And that is not science fiction but a possibility. Our world is in a mess, Ed, and getting worse, but our Lord warned us about it. It is all the more reason to watch and pray, and trust in the Lord and love Him with all our hearts. --Hank
