jesusfreak508@aol.com You and Kalos have sure been going at this. I keep trying to get you two to look at the context, remember without context the scripture becomes pretext. :-). From scripture there is no sustainable argument that Paul was saying women should not talk in church nor can it be shown he is addressing just a local custom (where women were seated apart from their husbands and hollering across the church to ask questions). He is saying the women is to be in subjection to her husband, I think we all agree to that. He said if you have a question ask it when you get home I think we all agree to that. What then could he be talking about. Could it be women that were intentionally or unintentionally asking questions that the husband should have addressed before as the head and priest of the family? Can you imagine how it would reflect on a man if his wife stood up and asked, “is a tithe only 5 percent?” Everyone would look to the husband and first ask what are you trying to pull, if he was innocent of withholding his tithe then the next question is why haven’t you fully explained the law of tithing to your family. The women may have one of two motives for doing this one ignorance on her part, her husband had in fact failed to perform his duty. Or she knew the answer but wanted to embarrass her husband. Either way she would out of subjection to her husband and Paul was saying this was wrong. Remember the Man was schooled in religious matters the women were to be taught by their father and later by their husband. EdB |

The "Law" referred to in 1 Corinthians 14:34 is Gen. 3:16. "...Yet your desire and craving will be for your husband, and he will rule over you." AMPLIFIED Genesis 3:16 To the woman He said, I will greatly multiply your grief and your suffering in pregnancy and the pangs of childbearing; with spasms of distress you will bring forth children. Yet your desire and craving will be for your husband, and he will rule over you. In reference to 1 Cor 14:34 she writes: "Find this law in the Pentateuch. I've tried and can't even find any reference to it." AMPLIFIED 1 Corinthians 14:34 The women should keep quiet in the churches, for they are not authorized to speak, but should take a secondary and subordinate place, just as the Law also says. [Gen. 3:16.] The Pentateuch (the five books of Moses) is generally referred to as "the Law." The "Law" referred to in 1 Corinthians 14:34 is Gen. 3:16. 'It should also be noticed that the title "the Law" is occasionally used loosely to refer to the whole of the Old Testament,' (http://bible.crosswalk.com/Dictionaries/SmithsBibleDictionary/). Matthew 22:40 '*all the Law and the Prophets.* I.e., the whole old Testament' (MacArthur Study Bible). In Matthew 5:17 and elsewhere, '"The Law and the Prophets" speaks of the entirety of the OT Scriptures...' (MacArthur Study Bible). 'John 10:34 *written in your law. I.e., in Ps. 82:6. The term 'law' was sometimes applied to the entire Old Testament' (Ryrie Study Bible). John 15:25 (ESV) But the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: 'They hated me without a cause.' 'The reference [to "their law"] is to Ps. 35:19' (Ryrie Study Bible). 1 Cor. 14:21 (ESV) In the Law it is written, "By people of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord." Here 'the Law' is a reference to Isaiah 28:11,12. ------------- While we are bashing Paul, let's not forget to bash God. Because it is the LORD God who said: "...Yet your desire and craving will be for your husband, and he will rule over you." Gen. 3:16. Paul was merely alluding to what the LORD God had already said. |
