Greetings Melanie! If I might make a suggestion about how one view's Paul and women, I would say that we should not judge him based upon today's standards, but by his own time. What do I mean by that? Simply this, I believe that Paul gets a bad rap for his views on women. In the first place, I think that most of his views are misunderstood, so that we are really reacting to what we thought he taught as opposed to what he actually taught. Secondly, I believe that we do him a major injustice to judge him based upon our culture and time and not his own. Women in Paul's day had no rights, no education, no authority, no value. The culture was dead wrong. Even Genesis makes it clear that God created woman to be "an equal power", or a partner for man. It was never God's desire that woman be beaten down. However, the culture in which Paul lived did exactly that very thing. Yet, Paul opened the door for greater things. He taught that there was not gender or racial distinctions in Christ. He openly accepted women ministry partners. The things he said and did (under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit) were groundbreaking in his day. We may not always like what Paul says, but it is Scripture. :-) There are many things in Scripture that I don't always like, or that I would rather not hear. However, I must submit to God's revealed will rather than my own. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
