1 | Women speak in church? | 1 Cor 14:34 | charis | 1284
Friend, to answer your short question, YES!, they do. More seriously, I have been to churches where women are literally not allowed to say anything at all in the sanctuary. I thought this was unnnatural, and a bit legalistic. (As I recall, women made up for it elsewhere :-) I believe that Paul was addressing a specific situation in the Church at Corinth, not a general doctrine for every church for all time. I think you are asking whether or not women should be allowed to preach or teach or hold office. As for preaching and teaching, I think that all Christians are called to proclaim their faith and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. As to 'office' and the pulpit, I admit I am moderately chauvinistic. Moderate because my church has female deacons, and they (and the elder's wives) preach at times during our evening services, which are usually a bit more informal than Sunday morning worship. Chauvinistic (to some) because I generally believe that the pastor and elders should be men, ideally with (a) wife and family. I think this is the pattern we have been given, and that there is balance in it. However, this said, I would not say, "Never." I am open to other ideas from the Bible. In Christ Jesus. |

2 | Women speak in church? | 1 Cor 14:34 | inHzsvc | 3471
You said "you think" Paul was addressing a specific situation at Corinth. Yet, Paul said "let your women keep silence in the churches."--not church, but churches. He goes on to say "it is a shame for women to speak in the church." How else can this be taken. I'm sure the Holy Spirit assumed some would say what you are saying so He inspired Paul to also tell Timothy, "Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp athority over the man, but to be in silence"(I Tim. 2;11,12). There is absolutely no way to take this but that women are to be in silence. Paul is here writing to a young preacher instructing him how to act in any church. The man is the head of the woman(I Cor. 11:2,3). This is not popular, but, it is Scriptural. These liberal times that we live in are the problem.
3 | Women speak in church? | 1 Cor 14:34 | charis | 3474
Dear inHzsvc, I notice the capital :-) Yes, these are liberal times we live in. However, if you take the 'then, there, so forever and wherever' approach, you must apply it to every single thing. So, in your church are women forbidden to sing and worship? Does this only apply to the period of time when the services are being held, or are women not allowed a peep at anytime within the walls of your church building. Does this include the parking lot, or even on the way to church. How about female children? Forgive me, I only use these absurdities to show the legalistic nature of the argument. I am sure that a woman could usurp authority over a man without saying a word, and I daresay that it may happen even in your church. It is also possible for women to speak, yet be fully under the authority of men. Our attitude of faith can make the difference. As I spoke on another line, I believe that pastoral authority should be in the hands of men chosen by God. But to 'gag' or 'muzzle' women using legalistic interpretation of scripture is not my bent. You deplore my use of 'I think' and 'I believe,' but I must say that your 'I know' and 'the scripture says' is just another version of the same thing. Otherwise, the church would not be split the way it is. Or, perchance, are you claiming 'right,' with everyone else 'wrong?' If we say, "Thus saith the Lord in His word..." are we not acting as prophets proclaiming the word of God? Friend, we all have ideas of what the word of God says. My own thinking (I think) is that 'I know' is not very humble, nor is it absolute. The only thing that I claim to know, is Jesus Christ, and His salvation. I am happy to know that your church is conservative in these liberal times, and pray that the peace of the Lord Jesus would be upon you in abundance. Love in Jesus' name, charis |

4 | Women speak in church? | 1 Cor 14:34 | Joel | 3481
Does anyone wonder why women are becoming more active in the church. (whether you agree with that or not). I believe it is because we as men are not being active ourselves. When we men are passive and just sit back, I believe it is sin (Genesis 3). But it's very easy for us to just sit back and let what comes, come and what goes, go. But, we are to be leaders and active in how we serve in the church. And if we are concerned with the way women are serving in church: it's the male gender's responsibility to make a difference. . . 5 | Women speak in church? | 1 Cor 14:34 | inHzsvc | 3485
Joel, That is absolutely true, in most places. However, in the church I am a member of, the men still take the authoritative role. If you aren't in one, trust me, there are still some out there. God bless. |
