1 | Is Mt 28:18 commanding water baptism? | Acts 2:38 | Ray | 77451
Hi disciplerami, I agree with Searcher56 that Matthew 28:18-20 does not mention water, and neither Mark 16:16 nor Acts 2:38 mention water. Tell me if you would what verse you were thinking of when you wrote, "Since the Holy Spirit was imparted at God's discretion, when and where God chose to pour it out..." The verse that comes to my mind expresses the opposite, Matthew 7:11, "If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your Father in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him." Luke 11:13, "If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give the *holy *spirit to those who ask Him?" John 3:34 tells me that Jesus spoke the words of God; He gives the *spirit without measure. We need to be washed with the word of God. Notice that I put holy spirit in lower case. Are you open to putting your Holy Spirit in lower case since you have the connection of "pouring IT out". From the heart, Ray |

Searcher56 agreed with me at one time. See his 4 comment at this July 10, 2001 post: ID#9136 Searcher56 lumped all of the Baptism verses in Acts together, along with the 1 Cor. 1:13 which I'm sure he believes is water baptism!?. So maybe he isn't the one you want to be lining up with, since it is pretty hard to tell where he stands on this issue. Maybe you can clear that up with him. Maybe he is just being argumentative now, or maybe he was just being argumentative then. Maybe it is just a fun exercise for him. Maybe he is honestly confused, mistaken, or maybe he has changed. I don't know, but I do know that searchering for the truth requires consistency. Let me know YOUR thoughts. Thanks, Disciplerami |

3 | Is Mt 28:18 commanding water baptism? | Acts 2:38 | Searcher56 | 77488
Disciplerami, I am misunderstood. When I said "No" to "Is Matthew 28:18-20 a command to receive water baptism?" ... I was looking at the word "receive" ... the correct verb woould be "administer". I also pointed out that the sequence listed in Matthew 28:18-20 is not the order it happened. I do believe 1 Cor. 1:13 is water baptism ... it is what man does to man. |

Hi Searcher56, I am sorry that I misunderstood you. However, I still do not understand you for I see no "receive" or "administer" in Matthew 28:18-20. As for a sequence in the passage, it seems to be a process where disciples are made by washing them in the word of the triune God and teaching them to follow the commandments of Jesus which leads them to do good deeds. If you were talking about the "receive" in Acts 2:38, I do not see that as meaning administer. Verse 41 says that those who had received his word were baptized; in other words that had received the gift of the *holy *spirit. That is how I see it. I do not see water baptism in 1 Corinthians 1:13, especially when Paul says that he wasn't sent to baptize but to preach the gospel and "the word of the cross". That sounds to me like a washing by the blood of Christ shed on the cross. From the heart, Ray |
