1 | the Spirit of Truth | John 7:17 | sgosh | 167272
John 16:13 tells us the Spirit of Truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth. We know it is true because GOD'S word says it. If we then have differing interpretations of GOD'S word, and assuming we are to rely on the Holy Spirit for the guidance, why would the Holy Spirit teach people totally different things on the same Scrpiture? Romans 14:5 also tells us, "Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind". Romans 2:15 says God's laws are written on our hearts. If further says in Matthew, Mark, and Luke that a kingdom divided against itself will not stand. With these scriptures in mind, can it be assumed the reason for the division among Christians is the fact that some are not being guided by the Holy Spirit - Spirit of Truth? I mean the really major issues like: Can you loose your salvation, Baptism being required for salvation, etc. I am a new Christian and amazed at the lack of unity regarding the interpretation of scripture. Any thoughts that can help? Please try to keep it simple, I have no formal education in any of this like it sounds that some of you have. Thanks Sam |

2 | the Spirit of Truth | John 7:17 | Emmaus | 167301
Sam, All these question come down to the question of authority and an authoritative interpreter of Scripture, because Scripture alone, though authoritative, is often interpreted very differently on important questions to the destruction of unity. For Catholics like me the answer lies in the Church, which claims authority to interpret and settled disputed interpretation of Scripture, relying on the promise of Christ to His disciples that the Holy Spirit would lead them to all truth. If you have a dispute with your brother "take it to the Church." Matt 16:18; 18:19. I am the only one on this forum to profess this, so I am simply stating my answer to your questions, without intent to start or engage in debate Emmaus |

3 | Biblical Interpretation? | John 7:17 | lionheart | 167303
When it comes to biblical interpretation I think the bible is pretty specific regarding ones right or ability to interpret.2 Peter 1:20,21. Maybe we get application and interpretation mixed up? Maybe? Interpretation remains constant where as applicatin can and does change. No two lives are what we would call identical. We all lead lives that are somewhat different aned at times very different when it comes to the challenges that we each may encounter. What say you? 4 | Biblical Interpretation? | John 7:17 | gospelmann | 167311
Just an observation of myself that I'll offer. I have noticed that when ever I didn't like what God was telling me in his word is when I started doing the most "interpreting". I have come to the sometimes painful conclusion that God said what He meant, and meant what He said. I need to do less interpreting and more accepting. As for application, John chapter14:15 says, "If you love me keep my commands", He didn't say if it was convenient or culturaly acceptable, or if I wanted to. He said If I love Him. That 4 letter word just took application to a whole new level. In Christian Love gospelmann |
