1 | Kathy, Is "Lifting His name" Biblical? | John 12:32 | Searcher56 | 103904 | ||
Kathy, - Where does the Bible mention "lifting His Name" ... - Why do you say "Lord I lift Your Name on High" ... what is the Biblical source? John 12:32-33 is about His being lifted up on the cross. John 3:14 is a cross reference and it mentions Moses (Num 21:4-9), where those who looked at the bronze snake up on the pole lived (vv 8-9). None of these references mention anything about lifting His name or any name. So where do you see lifting His Name being Biblical? Searcher |

Hi, Searcher; I don't see any direct connection between "Lord, I lift your name on high" and Jesus being lifted up on the cross either. But words have a generic meaning too. In this case, I think they make an indirect connection - we lift up Jesus' name because of what he did in being lifted up on the cross. "Lift" means to raise or elevate. We are called to praise Jesus by name. To lift his name on high is to elevate it and praise it. It is an acknowledgement and celebration of this truth: "... God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." (Phillipians 2:9-11) At least, that's what I mean when I sing that chorus. Peace and grace, Steve aka Indiana Jones |

I think this is exegesis ... while His name is above every name, God did that, already ... and the correlation with His being lifted up on the cross is also forcing Scripture. "Lord, I lift your name on high" sounds nice, but it is not in Scripture. |

Hi, Searcher; Shucks; we can't seem to agree on anything. Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services aren't in Scripture either, but God examines the heart and I don't think he minds. It's hardly "forcing Scripture" to note that the reason we (some of us, anyway) lift up Jesus' name before the world is because he was lifted up on the cross. In fact, there's no other reason to do so. And it's the reason we must do so. The Bible doesn't claim an exclusive on ordinary words. For example, the Bible attaches special significance to the words "I am". That doesn't mean that I can't use the same words to answer the question "Who here is glad Jesus didn't come back 20 years ago?" I am; I'd have been in deep weeds - or tares if we must be strictly Biblical in all of our speech. ;-) So I'll just keep on lifting up Jesus' name in song. Peace and grace, Steve aka Indiana Jones |
