dabmci I think with this one question, you are also resolving another debate on this forum, as to whether 'once saved - always saved'. Judas, as an Apostle, was baptised and a follower of Jesus. After his betrayal of Jesus, Scripture shows that Judas regretted his action - whether it was because he knew he was in trouble (with God) or because he was truly repentant is something we'll never now. But, in Jesus sermons He addressed the issue that how you live your life is important, in addition to accepting Jesus, through Baptism. Matthew 7:21-23 21 "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name? Did we not drive out demons in your name? Did we not do mighty deeds in your name?' 23 Then I will declare to them solemnly, 'I never knew you. Depart from me, you evildoers.' In the Passion of Christ, John 17:12 When I was with them I protected them in your name that you gave me, and I guarded them, and none of them was lost except the son of destruction, in order that the scripture might be fulfilled. We know that Jesus was referring to Judas in this verse. Entrance into the kingdom is only for those who do the will of the Father. On the day of judgment (on that day) those who lived their lives in evil will be rejected by Jesus, as we saw regarding Judas in John 17:12. In answer to your question, it didn't matter if Judas repented - Jesus rejected him. Brian |

Dear Brian, If a person is born again through faith in Christ, He has become a "new creature" and as Paul said: "Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come." (2 Cor 5:17) My point is that a person who claims faith but lives an evil and unrepentent life, is decieved in believing that was ever "in Christ". That is why Jesus said "...I NEVER knew you." 2 Cor 13:5 "Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves!" The assurance that a christian has comes from the evidence of his spiritual walk. He is comforted by seeing the process of sanctification causing him to hate his sins and to love righteousness. He rejoices to witness the grace of God working within himself, some times slowly and other times quickly. Eph 2:10 "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them." To God Alone Be the Glory, John Reformed |

Dear Brian, Do you doubt it? Why would Paul tell us to examine ourselves to see if we are really in the faith if baptism assured salvation? John |

John No, I'm not doubting it. Do you feel that some of these people who have been Baptised and not in Christ, were at least desiring to have a relationship with Christ, but for whatever reason - it did not develop over the long term? Brian |

7 | Questions??? | Matt 27:3 | John Reformed | 74503 | ||
Brian, Those who desire Christ will be saved. The desire itself is an assurance that the Holy Spirit is working in that person's life. But if he desire is not placed in one's heart by God, it is not a spiritual but a carnal desire. For instance: a person may desire Christ simply to escape damnation but not be repentant of their sins. This is a carnal desire for Christ to save them from just punishment that is not accompanied with the sorrow for sin or love for the Savior. These graces will always be present in saving faith. Thankfully, none of us our in a position to judge any one else's heart. John |

John I also agree with you on this. To seek a relationship with God, out of fear of God and His punishment doesn't follow the same path as loving God with all of your heart and soul. Do you feel that as people get to know more of the Truth of God, then their love for God, grows and with that, their relationship with God, develops - a maturing process? Brian |

Brian, Yes, the maturation process that we go through is called sanctification. But we must always be aware that it is God in us who does the sanctifying and it is not we that sanctify ourselves. Of course God does not operate in a vacumn, but employs means by which He molds and shapes us into the the likeness of Christ. Prayer, obediance, self-examination, study of Scripture etc. are some of those means. He alsochanges us through trials and tribulations. The most important thing for me to remember is that: "And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose." Rom 8:28 John |

John Again, I have to agree with you. The times of trials and tribulations, is one in which man's commitment and perseversance strengthens his relationship with God. Unfortunately, for some men, this is also the time in which they abandon or back away from their relationship with God - even though God will continue to reach out to them. It's not to say that these men never desired their relationship with God, it's just they didn't have enough faith, commitment and/or perseverance to help them through the rough times. These are a sample of the people to whom I was referring to initially. They are Christians who have not given 100 percent of their lives to Christ - which represents all of us - in some way, shape or form. And, Jesus will decide which of them He will accept. Thank you, I do appreciate your time and thought towards this discussion. Brian |
