1 | What does "send her away" refer to? | Matt 1:19 | EdB | 63487 | ||
Justme You hit the nail on the head too many just do not read. Many were turned off reading in school. When I was in school they never taught me the joy of reading, they used it almost as punishment and I quickly made that connection. Luckly for me I got hooked reading earlier than you. I'm totally surprized by how many have never read the Bible. Many claim to have had but once they get honest many admit they have never read much more than a few verses. I have the same NASB bible you have only not in calf skin. I love it! I think I warned you before do not let water touch the edge of the pages. Instead of protecting the page the gold gilting just washes off. This Lockman Bible is the only Bible I have had such a problem with. When I asked Lockman say that is the way it should be. I will probably never buy another Lockman Bible due to this. There is a book binder that said he can clean gold paint off my Bible and apply real gilting to stop the problem. However the cost is near the price of a Bible. EdB |

EdB:Thanks for the reply. The problem of the gilded edges you mentioned is pretty standard for most Bibles. I have a silver gilded blue leather NIV Life Application Bible that shows even the slightest pariticle of moisture. My Cambrige KJV is the same as well. So I believe its is more common than you might think. Something you might like to know is WAL MART has in the shoe department a product called INSTANT SHINE made by Professionals Choice. This is a spounge like material soaked with minkoil and something else. I have been using this for several years and before that a product by Kwikwi shoe shine. All my leather Bibles are nice looking and have not torn or worn like you would expect. The covers are flexable, and some are 30 years old. INSTANT SHINE cost about 1.60, which is well worthit. I think if you try this you will be really amazed. I have only three bonded leather Bibles. Bonded leather is really like mushed up leather then pressed out, much like cardboard is. Rarely does the bonded leather material hold up to much use. I think the new leather look plastic would be better than bonded leather. I have rebound two old Bibles, one which was from 1856. They turned out very nice. The real problem is time and patients. What is ironic to me is some Bible leather covers are pig skin! Does something seem a little odd to you? Also the Foundation Press' Calf skin leather has a life time guarantee. I did have a problem with the ultrathin NASB, I just recently bought, with the sewing pulling the pages appart. I called Foundation Press at 714-879-2286 and explained my problem. They stood behind it with no problems whatsoever. More and more you will notice that Bible makers are not guaranteing their genuine leather Bibles for life as the once did. Zondervan still does, and I have had two replaced in the last ten years. If you notice many Bible Presses have stoped making Bibles, or joined with ather companies. Moody Press once produced a very well made Bible. But now they don't print any Bibles. Holman is now joined with Brodman. Nelson I think is gone, as far as I can tell. In the last summer months many Bible companies and Bookstores were hit with phoney orderders for Bibles, coming mainly from Nigeria. World Bibles got hit and several other publishers. This was an evil attack that hurt bookstores and some publishers, to now there is no C.O.D. anymore. Ed, what is so odd is we have become so accustomed to fine Bibles it is easy to forget there was a time when the common man could not even read let alone think of ever having a Bible. Today in America Bibles are plentifull. But, in many parts of the world still today people do not have even the gospel of John in their native tongue. We are blessed, are we not? Oh what a responsibility we will be held accountable for to Christ, someday. justme |

Justme That is interesting what you say about the gilting. I have talked to many on this subject and they all tell me the original purpose of gilting was to protect the paper page edge from moisture. I have many Bible I can actually wet my finger and rub the gilting with no ill effect yet if I touch my Lockman bible with anything even moist the gilting rubs right off. Your right about bonded leather they last me about 5 years and then the cover is gone. Of course the pages only last about 10 years before they are too yellowed soiled or torn to be read. We have a Lifeway Christian Book store here in Tampa that has a binder that does excellent work. I had him recover my most precious Bible. It was bonded leather and I bought it for 17 dollars to use as a desk Bible. I started using it and loved the format. It was NKJV Nelson's New Open Bible, and since it was bonded leather the cover lasted about 5 years and I had it recovered. It cost 50 dollars to recover it but I could not bring myself to let it fall apart. I think Moody and Nelson are still around. I still get their catalogues and ads. I will not buy Zondervan anything since they came out with TNIV which showed me how willing they were to sell out. Holman made an excellent Bible I really like the binding and covers on Thompson and Tyndale Bibles. I love old Bibles and people know this and send me theirs. I also have an old Lutheran Book of Worship printed in the late 1800’s (much like a hymnal) in those days you would buy your own copy. It was my Grandfather’s that he carried it with his Bible. Your right about us being blessed and others not having Bibles. That is one thing the Assemblies of God are trying to change. They are sending millions of copies of the “Fire” Bible translated in the native language to people around the world. The Bible got it name because it has a flame (much like the flame of Pentecost) on the cover and people in foreign countries picked up on this named it the Fire Bible. I kind of liked that term “Fire Bible” EdB |
