Hank:I find your view interesting and agree with what you have written. What I find bothersome, not in your notes, is that in most Christian book stores, the KJV still has a better sales record than any other version. I am refering to our area of Missouri. The NKJV which I do not have, but fine more readable, sells poorly. I have no clue as to why. As a note, the reading grade level of the KJV is 12th grade, the NIV is 7th or 8th grade. The changing of langauage is a big factor. However, equally problematic is the many students graduating from highschool, with low reading comprehension and vocabulary skills. These students would have a problem reading the Living Bible. Most highschools are teaching as if every student will be going on to college. Gone are the wood shops, metal shops, and automotive classes. Few schools even offer home ec's. Show a tape measure to most highschoolers and they don't know how to use it. Many colleges offer beginner math and english, and other non credit courses to prepare highschool graduates to start college. I know of one college that offers basic reading skills. With your note, and with what I have added into the mix, is there any way to find a contempoary language at a low enough grade level, for these pushed out non reading highschool graduates? The GOOD NEWS BIBLE was written for readers who had english as their second language. Would that version not even meet the needs of poor readers? I have doubts it would. I have seen in adult Sunday School classs people who won't read out loud, because they just are not able. This is a very real problem for many churches. With all that I have said, why do you suppose the KJV is still such a good seller? Hope you are feeling ok and the pacemaker is doing as it should. justme |

2 | What does "send her away" refer to? | Matt 1:19 | Hank | 63417
Justme, thanks for your wish for my improved health, and I seem to be doing just fine, thanks to the combined benefic workings of Prayers, Pacemaker and Pills. :-) Regarding the continuing strong sales of the King James Bible, I think this may be explained, at least in part, by two things -- many are bought as gifts, and many are bought out of ignorance of other, easier-to-read modern versions. Unfortunately the sale of a Bible is no guarantee that it will be read. The woeful lack of reading skills of many of our high school students and even of some college students is a national disgrace. But we can't place the blame entirely on the shoulders of our educators. The breakdown of the basic unit of society, the home, is responsible more than anything else for the plight in which vast numbers of children find themselves. It does not take a village to raise a child, but it takes loving, dedicated and God-fearing fathers and mothers. That's God's plan, the family is God's establishment, and we always find ourselves in a sea of troubles when we ignore what He established. --Hank

Hank:That's good to hear you are doing better. I have known a few Christians who have had transplants, of different kinds. I remind myself this is only tempoary, soon there will be a new body, that will last for eternity. No more pills, surgery, or pain, for some day soon we will see Jesus! Just to add a note, I heard Janet Parsons (I hope I got the name right) on the radio saying how well home schoolers do in most all areas. I think if we had it to do over, my wife and I would have considered home schooling. I certianly think Christian parents today are face with more problems then we were. On the same token there are more choices today as well. You are correct about not needing a village to raise a child. I would include the support and encouragement of the church the family attends is very helpfull. My third grade Sunday School teacher has had a lasting impression on my life. He gave me a New testament with a note and a verse, The verse was Matthew 5:16. I will always remember him with found affection and admiration. The way you talk about your dad, and your character are noteable Christian qualities, that show in the depth of your writting. My friend "love never fails" is a verse that I see in you. God Bless. justme |
