Another Commentary on Luke 3:36 this one from John Gill Luke 3:36 Which was the son of Cainan… This Cainan is not mentioned by Moses in (Genesis 11:12) nor has he ever appeared in any Hebrew copy of the Old Testament, nor in the Samaritan version, nor in the Targum; nor is he mentioned by Josephus, nor in (1 Chronicles 1:24) where the genealogy is repeated; nor is it in Beza's most ancient Greek copy of Luke: it indeed stands in the present copies of the Septuagint, but was not originally there; and therefore could not be taken by Luke from thence, but seems to be owing to some early negligent transcriber of Luke's Gospel, and since put into the Septuagint to give it authority: I say "early", because it is in many Greek copies, and in the Vulgate Latin, and all the Oriental versions, even in the Syriac, the oldest of them; but ought not to stand neither in the text, nor in any version: for certain it is, there never was such a Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, for Salah was his son; and with him the next words should be connected, |

New Creature I really don't have a problem with Cainan nor the ages of the patriarchs. Nor do I have a problem believing the creation story was passed on by word of mouth from people that talked to Adam. All I was offering was the fact that we know there are people not listed in the major genealogy lists that did in fact live. While this is most prevalent in the generations listing the kings, Cainan may also be an example. I have heard many explanations on the subject of Cainan and have read many commentaries but no one is able to offer finite proof one way or another. Therefore the fact remains there could have been a man called Cainan and another generation not listed in the Genesis genealogy. I also offered the opinion of a man that had studied this subject for over 20 years and authored the Reese Chronological Bible. I do think he may be considered an expert in this field. However not knowing how he arrived at his conclusions I can not/ do not defend the Reese dating I just offered it. If you and Pastor Glenn are satisfied with the ages/dates you have arrived at Praise God! For me this subject has passed it's usefulness and further pursuit offers no benefit. EdB |
