1 | Did Shem exit the Ark at 98, outlv Abrm? | Gen 11:10 | Pastor Glenn | 140352 | ||
Normally we just skip right past boring geneologies unless we need a sleep aid. But I find certain implications very interesting. I checked the lifetimes. Adam lived until Enoch was 308. I wanted to point out that Noah lived until Abraham was 60 and Shem (Abraham's ancestor) outlived Abraham to see Jacob's 50th birthday (I think I added right). The point is that living witnesses were always present to present "living epistles". Does anyone find this as interesting as I do? Hello? zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZ (....faint sound of crickets in background.......) Anybody there? Pastor Glenn |

I find this very important and much overlooked From what can be learned from Bibical chronology, one can find that Shem, the son of Noah lived 600 years. The first 100 years of his life were spent before the flood, and then Shem continued living 500 years after the flood had passed. Also by following Bibical years, I find that Shem outlived Abraham, and Shem was alive even in Isaac and Jacob's days. What makes this so intresting, is the fact that Shem was one of only 8 people that witnessed the ark being built,the ungodliness of the human race before the flood, the taking of all the animals aboard the ark two by two, the rains descending until everyone that was not aboard the ark perished from the face of the earth. It must have been truly amazing to people like Abraham, and others to hear directly from Shem, the account of how the ark was built, about how all those species of animals and their food was taken aboard the ark. And to hear Shem speak about the cries of the ungodly people who drowned in the flood. And then, how after the flood, they began to repopulate the earth. Wouldn't it have been wonderful, if we would be able to read a more detailed account of what happened before, during and after the flood from people like Abraham and others who probably heard about it first hand from Shem himself. Maybe the reason why God had Shem, the Antediluvial patriarch continue to live 500 years even after the flood had passed. was so the post-flood people could learn in detail about the flood directly from only one of 8 survivors of the flood. Hello New Creature, I thought that this subject would spur much more debate. But, I think that as some forum members read the scriptures they forgot their train of thought when they woke back up after: Gen 11:10 These are the generations of Shem: Shem was an hundred years old, and begat Arphaxad two years after the flood: Gen 11:11 And Shem lived after he begat Arphaxad five hundred years, and begat sons and daughters. ........... lets see... 100 plus 500 equals 600. Gen 11:12 And Arphaxad lived five and thirty years, and begat Salah: Gen 11:13 And Arphaxad lived after he begat Salah four hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters. ............35 plus 403 equals ...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Gen 11:14 And Salah lived thirty years, and begat Eber: Gen 11:15 And Salah lived after he begat Eber four hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters. ............. 30 plus ...zzzzzzzzzzzzzz Gen 11:16 And Eber lived four and thirty years, and begat Peleg: ....... Well New Creature, exactly how old was Jacob when Shem died? I think 50. Pastor Glenn |

Glenn It appears that Jacob was 50 years young when Shem died. I also find that Abraham was 58 years young when Noah died One last fact that I find amazing is that Noah's father Lamech must have personally known Adam. Lamech appears to have been 56 years young when Adam died, and 113 when God translated Enoch. Can you imagine how the accounts about the building of the ark, the the wickedness of men and the flood as well as the account of how God took Enoch were being taught to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob? One has to be careful when analyzing a geneology. A variety of geneologies in the Bible get compressed. The geneology of David only lists three people for a fou hundred year period. The geneology of Jesus drops out known names. This was fine in the writers eyes. The term father could mean grandfather, great grandfather, etc. It was also used for other purposes. It was used for the master apprentice relationship as in Gen 4:19-21. Father was also used for the founders of a town or country. Thus it could mean what you said, or the flood could have happened hundreds of years earlier than it seems. each word is true, but our interpretations are not always accurate. Greentwiga |

Hello Greentwiga, "The geneology of David only lists three people for a fou hundred year period." This geneology that we see in Genesis 11 gives the ages of the fathers when they had a son, as well as, how long they lived afterwards. Geneologies in Chronicles don't do this. It is clear that this particular geneology is not compressed. "The geneology of Jesus drops out known names." I am aware of only two kings' names (I can't remember them off hand) that seem to be missing for some reason from one geneology. However, closer study using literal translations should help show why. I think we will find that certain very wicked kings were not real fathers to appearent sons and their real birth lines were cut off by God's judgement. If you remember a name in question, I think that it is worth investigating. This should not be considered "questioning the authority of scripture". It is simply part of bible "study". I am also aware of this scripture: Titus 3:9 But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain. We are werely counting years, in an effort to see overlapping lifespans. This shows that the accounts of the fall of man and the great flood were probably taught by first, second, and third hand knowledge. This means that information was not passed through many, many generations, as is generally thought. This is very significant, not "vain" at all. Your Brother in Christ, Pastor Glenn |

Dear Pastor Glenn; Look in Matthew 1. Between Uzziah and Jotham, in II Kings 11-15 and II Chron 22-27, there was Ahaziah, Joash, Amaziah, Azariah (Uzziah) and Jotham. The only one mentioned is Uzziah. Also missing is Jehoaikim. Now Joash, Amaziah and Jotham all were said to do right. Some much more wicked kings are kept in. Still, I acknowledge that the mention of ate age of birth makes it more unlikely that people were dropped out. I am willing to question interpretations, but I will not question the word. That is why I consider the possibility. What does bother me is people who try to make the flood the Black Sea Catastrophe. That requires ignoring parts of the story. Whether Abraham heard it directly or through many generations doesn't matter. Each and every word is true, Just as is the much more ancient story of Adam and Eve. What is really important about the Story of Noah is why He destroyed the world, Wickedness (covenant with spouse breaking), Evil (covenant with God breaking), corruption (bribes), and violence (war). This condemns our generation also. Jesus has every reason to return soon and end this system, for we are no better. You are right, whether some were left out of the geneology or not could get into violating Titus 3:9 Greentwiga |
