John 3:15 That whosoever believeth (pisteuo - a verb) in him should not (not cannot, or will not) perish, but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth (pisteuo- a verb) in him should not ( not cannot or will not) perish, but have everlasting life. in him should not perish, but have eternal life. John 3:36 He that believeth (pisteuo - a verb, denoting ongoing and continious action) on the Son hath (echo - to hold one's self to a thing, to lay hold of a thing, to adhere or cling to) everlasting life: For John 5:24 Same as previous verses. ("hath everlasting life" denotes present possession, and future possession only for those who continue in the faith) John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: (The sheep are those who continue to hear and follow Him) 28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any [man] pluck them out of my hand. (This is the promise for the ones who persevere in the faith. "Eternal Security" involves perseverance in the faith. The promise of eternal life is to the "overcomers" Rev. 3:5 He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels. Concerning Rom. 8:35, 37-39 Scripture says sin separtates us from God. Isaiah 59:2 Eph 1:12 That we should be (not necesssarily will be, but should be. it's is within God's perfect will that we should be, but then there is God's permissive will also) to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. 13 In whom ye also [trusted], after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, 14 Which is the earnest (arrhabon - money which in purchases is given as a pledge or downpayment that the full amount will subsequently be paid.) of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory. The earnest is only a downpayment Eph 4:30 also mentions the possibility of grieving the Holy Spirit, along with the admonition not to. Phil 1:6 God continues to abide in those who continue to abide in Him see John 15:4. Abide is key here as it is throughout God's word Heb. 10:12-14 merely speaks about the ones who are sanctified. Not about whether salvation can be lost or not 1Pet. 1:3 Blessed [be] the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope (elpis - expectation of eternal salvation - I don't see how hope and assurance can be the same. I can hope for many things. That does not mean I will necessarily have all I hope for.) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, (but were not home to fill the spot reserved for us, which is yet future.) 5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. (Notice the ones who are kept are not merely kept but they are kept by faith - our faith. This also talks about salvation which is to be revealed in the last time. That means it has not as yet been revealed) Concerning the words "Who are kept by the power of God through faith" God's word also says, " Jude 1:21 Keep yourselves in the love of God," So we see we are kept as we keep. In this my reply I showed how the verses you mentioned do not to me at least support the concept of unconditional eternal security" You may differ I respect that |

While I do disagree with you, you do make an excellent point: that true, saving faith is not praying a prayer and then "whatever." True, saving faith is a constant faith, and those who are truly His will endure to the end. I do hold that God does preserve His people until the end, however. It is He that keeps us in a state of grace. But He that justifies also sanctifies. --Joe! |

Joe, While what you say is true, what is in the following verse of the Bible is also true. Jude 1:21 Keep yourselves in the love of God, 1 Peter 1:5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. We are kept as we keep on abiding or clinging to Him see John 15:4 also I in Him and He in me - a joint relatinship with Him. A partnership if you will, Continual abiding. |

You are indeed correct. We are "kept by the power of God." Not by holding on and holding out, but "by the power of God." Genuine saving faith is the kind of faith that perseveres. Yet perseverance is the result, not the cause of salvation. Jude 1:21 "Keep yourselves in the love of God." God does the saving and God does the keeping. A proper understanding of what salvation is and all that God does when he saves a soul will show that we do not keep ourselves. There is NOTHING we can do to earn, keep, or add anything to our salvation. |

so then how do you explain "Keep yourselves in the love of God" in the verse I posted in my last reply? I will repaste at this time Jude 1:21 Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. |

New Creature, I've fought this same battle many times before (including in this forum) and, as your finding out, people are pretty set on what they want to believe and no matter how many verses that show that we must be on guard against losing our way, they're always going to refer back to a few verses that when taken out of context support a "once saved always saved" doctrine. When it all comes down to the bottom line though, it doesn't really matter which way you believe. As long as you have accepted Christ in your life, and continue to believe and not reject Him, you will be saved. Others may also add that you must also be baptized, but that's a whole other can of worms. |

Amen to that. I guess there are many of us that just like to hash out some of the more controversial passages of Scripture. For me it's not to try to convert people to my thinking or way of interpreting Scripture. In fact I may be wrong about certain things I believe. I may be sincere, but I could be sincerely wrong. I once thought "once saved always saved" was Bibical. But after a more careful examination of God's word, I cannot any longer accept that teaching. Others can, and so be it. Still it makes for interesting discussion.

Then I would suggest you look again. There isn't a good reason to believe you can loose your salvation. He said," I will loose none of them",what more do you need to know.Trust HIM.By faith not by sight.JB

Hi, if I may, my wife and I have often been under attack with doubts about our salvation. I know the Bible says: "I know whom I have beleved and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day." 2 Tim. 1:12 I do not have to be busy trying to keep my salvation for it is in His hands. I like the old hymn that goes: From whence this fear and unbelief, If God, my Father, put to grief His spotless Son for me? Can He, the righteous Judge of men, Comdemn me for that debt of sin Which, Lord, was charged to Thee? Complete atonementThou hast made, And to the utmost farthing paid Whate'er Thy people owed ; How, then can wrath on me take place, If sheltered in God's righteousness And sprinkled by Thy blood ? If Thou hast my discharge procured, And freely in my place endured The whole of wrath divine ; Payment God will not twice demand, First at my bleeding Surety's hand, And then again at mine. --- PRAISE HIS HOLY NAME --- Turn, then, my soul, unto thy rest; The merits of thy great High Priest Speak peace and libery ; Trust in His efficacious blood, Nor fear thy banishment from God, Since Jesus died for thee. Kept in Christ's love |
