1 | One born of God cannot sin? | 1 John 3:9 | BadDog | 63478
Isa, This has been puzzling to many, including myself. I think we need to look at the context of 1st John IOT see where he is going w/ this. Because in 1 John 1:8, 10 John says that if anyone says that he doesn't sin, he is a liar! So is he contradicting himself in such a short space of the same letter?! No. A main reason for writing 1 John was in response to gnostics, who were teaching that it was OK for believers to sin, since that was the physical, not the spiritual. So here in 3:9 John is saying that the believer, who has been born-again, is sinless in his inner man. John contrasts light/darkness, death/life, and also (here) sin/righteousness. Some try to make a simple present tense in Greek say something to the effect that no one born of God will "continue to sin." (NIV) However the NASB has it right here. When a person trusts in Christ, he in reality becomes a new creation (2 Cor. 5:17). That regenerated inner man does not sin. of course, we can and each of us does sin - daily, but lets not pretend that that is OK, and try to distinguish between the body (which the gnostics taught was inherently bad) and the spirit. John teaches here that the inner man cannot sin. This was his point, IMO. BadDog |

I agree completely with you! Anyone born of or fathered by God connot even be capable of sin! We are a new creation (of God). (1Pet 1:23 ; Eph 4 24 etc.) If we are born again unto eternal life, how could that new creation be even cabable of sin? If so, then Christ died in vain!! M. J. Head |

Does free will stop at salvation? Are we not capable of doing the wrong thing willfully? would that not be sin?
4 | One born of God cannot sin? | 1 John 3:9 | M. J. Head | 144332
This subject of sin in a believers life is tied to the doctrine of the two natures that results from the new creation. (Ro 6:6 ; 2 Cor 5:17 ; Eph 2:15; 4:22-24 ; Col 3:9,10) Believers do indeed sin. 1 John 1 establishes that. The question is , what is the origen of that sin? Paul in Romans 7 states that "it is no longer I that do it (sin), but sin that dwells within me". And at the end of the passage he makes a very important statement; "so then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin". Paul is not talking here as an unbeliever but he is describing the conflict within a believer between the new man (himself) and the old man(the flesh) . To anwer your question, no, free will does not stop at salvation. Yes, we are capable of doing the the wrong thing willfully. And that is the point that our will is what chooses to do what the new man desires or what the old man wants. Sin resides with the old unregenerate flesh (old man) that was born of our mother. There is no sin in the new man that was born of God. When we sin , we yield (the will) to the lusts and temptations that come from the old nature or come through the old nature from the world around us. I believe that the KJV has 1 John 3:9 and 5:18 translated correctly |

Greetings M J Head, That was and interesting post and welcome to the forum. Are you saying, in essence, that the PSUCHIKOS, or soulish man is not a part of the real you and thus not a factor in a three part being after regeneration or that it is only the body that sins and the soul isn’t at fault? Ezekiel 18:20 (A) The soul that sinneth, it shall die. 1 Cor. 5:5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. 1 Thes. 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. If I hit myself on the thumb with a hammer is it not “I” that suffers, be that as it may? Have a great day, CDBJ |

6 | One born of God cannot sin? | 1 John 3:9 | M. J. Head | 144404
Hello CDBJ; I believe that our body is simply the "house" that our soul, mind, and spirit live in. The soul that we were born with has and does sin and is condemned as you quoted in Ezekiel 18:20. I believe that in 1Cor 5:5, Paul is saying that "the destruction of the flesh" is to destroy the power of the old nature over this believer, who ,by the way, returned later asking for forgiveness.(in 2 Cor) I believe that we believers (born again ones) have a new (soul if you wish) that is created by God in righteousness and true holiness (Eph 4:24) and that the "old man",ie, the old soul if you wish is still with us conflicting with the desires of the "new man" and the Holy Spirit. We still have a will to choose which we will obey and are therefore still responsible to God for the choice we make. If we "yield" to sin then we do not loose our salvation(we are sons of God) but we do suffer loss of fellowship with Him. If we hit ourselves on the thumb with a hammer, well ,we are responsible for our actions. I hope this helps explain my position which of course is not infallible. Your brother in Christ; M. J. Head |

Greetings M.J. Head, I would concur with you with the exception of the old and new soul. I believe that what we receive at the point of salvation is a living operative spirit which Adam managed to kill when he disobeyed God and passed the trait on to all those of his making. 1 Cor. 15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. We, with the exception of Christ, were all in Adam genetically speaking and thus the male passes down the old sin nature at conception to offspring which is born physically alive, body and soul, but the spirit is dead. Hence the need for rebirth as Jesus stated, John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. The word “see” comes to us from the word EIDO; by implication to know, be aware, behold. The spirit being that part of man that communicates with God. The part of us that houses the old sin nature, as I see it, is the flesh, or what Paul refers to in the Koine Greek as the SARX. I.E. death of flesh, good by old sin nature. The soul is eternal, the real you, as it were and will live on forever. Have a great day, CDBJ |

Hello CDBJ, Sorry for the long delay, I had other priorities. It is a difficult subject to get ones arms around. I referred the 2 souls for want of a better explanation for the source of sin in a believers life. To me it is very important to understand what that source is. I cannot accept the interpretation of many commentators that 1 John 1:9 and 5:18 are referring to a continueing sin in that which is born of God. The "seed" is from God. If it is even capable of sin then we have a huge problem on our hands! We would be saying that new creature, that new man, being born of God, is cabable of sin, and thus christ died in vain!! Because He was manifested to take away our sins, in Him is no sin, etc, we make God the source of sin in the believers life, if indeed that sin has its source in the new nature that is born of God. What do you think? Thank you, M. J. Head |

Greetings MJH, It was explained to me, by someone a lot smarter then I am that Adam passed on the old sin nature through procreation of the body. The 23 chromosomes of the males contribution, at conception, infects the cells structure, thus passing on the OSN, or old sin nature. We all contain 46 chromosomes but only 23 are used from each of the parents. The female, through meioses and polar body throws of her 23 contaminated chromosomes leaving 23 without the OSN. The male inseminates the female with his 23 chromosomes containing the OSN and the fetus starts with an OSN. Psalm 51:5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. This would also prove out how Jesus was born “without” an old sin nature because Mary was a virgin and conception was by the Holy Spirit. Man procreates and biological life starts in the womb; at the instance of physical life, when the child becomes independent of the mother, the instant it breaths on its own, God imparts soul life or, neshamah, in the Hebrew, and the fetus becomes a baby with a living soul. I know I’ll catch a lot of flack for this and all I can tell you is that‘s what I was taught years ago by my pastor R. B. Thieme Jr. He and a Dr. Jamieson came up with it and it all works out with Scripture and I believe it. If anyone asks me to prove it, I can’t, just take it or leave it. There is a web site, http://www.berachah.org/ Have a great day, CDBJ |

Hello CDBJ, I've heard of the theory of imparting the soul at birth. I don't think it makes any sense in light of Scripture. But that's another thread. :-) Steve |
