1 | When does the Baptism occur? | John 7:38 | Ray | 43801
Hi Makarios, I believe that we are indwelt by the Holy Spirit at the time of our initial faith in Christ, but we are filled with and baptized in the holy spirit all through our lives with Christ. I don't remember how much you and I have talked about this passage of John 7:37-39. In fact I may have changed my interpretation of it since we may have last talked of it. Here is my rendering of it with stars at the places of differing capitalization: John 7:37, "Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If any man is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, 'From *His innermost being shall flow rivers of living water.' But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the *spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified." I capitalized the "His" and put in lower case the "spirit" because the verses speak of those contrasts. He spoke of the Spirit, that is, "From His innermost being..." He spoke of the Spirit, that is, "for the spirit was not yet..." When you study the Holy Spirit be aware that it may not be speaking of the Person. I believe because of my personal study of the Scripture that the nine times that our NAS and NKJ speaks of "filled with the Holy Spirit" that holy spirit should be in lower case. Also Exodus 28:3 and Ephesians 5:18. I believe that Acts 13:52 should be rendered: "And the disciples were continually filled with joy and with the holy spirit." Acts 6:3, "But select from among you, brethren, seven men of good reputation, full of the spirit and of wisdom..." Acts 6:5, "...and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the holy spirit..." And Stephen, full of grace and power, was performing great wonders and signs among the people." I also believe that Acts 10:38 should be rendered: "You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the holy spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good..." When you keep this possibility in mind and apply it to the Scriptures then some more understanding can be achieved. At least it makes sense in my mind. From the heart, Ray |

2 | When does the Baptism occur? | John 7:38 | Makarios | 43806
Greetings Ray! It has been awhile since we have studied verses together, and I thank you for your response! John 7:37-38 is an interesting challenge here, and we can take a look at this verse with our "capitalization conscious" translations.. :-) As you know, the NASB does not capitalize "his" in John 7:38, but neither does the NKJV or the Amplified. I agree with the translators that 'his' should not be capitalized in John 7:38, and here is my reasoning behind it: When John speaks of a person's 'innermost being', a literal translation of this phrase could be 'out of his belly.' So could we conclude that the direct object of the phrase 'out of his belly' is the Holy Spirit? I believe that the direct object is "He who believes in Me..", not the Holy Spirit. So from the 'person' who believes in Christ will flow rivers of living water, and I believe that 'living water' describes the Holy Spirit. But I also agree with the translators (NAS, NKJ, Amplified) when they do not capitalize 'living water' because "living water" is not a "name" for the Holy Spirit, it is only describing the Holy Spirit. However, in John's explanation in verse 39, I believe that he is speaking of the Holy Spirit, and that "Spirit" should be capitalized, since in my view, John is clearly referencing the Holy Spirit and His coming after Jesus had ascended and was glorified. And I believe that the NASB, NKJV, and Amplified all show capitalization for Spirit in this verse. I guess I am a little "backwards" when it comes to my understanding of capitalization, since I have an almost totally opposite take on the capitalization in these verses than you do, my friend, but that is entirely appropriate! It is not entirely necessary for us to take the same side in capitalization.. :-) May the Lord bless you in your studies, Ray! Makarios |

Hi Makarios, I, too, believe that the living water is the holy spirit. But we get this blessing from the Holy Spirit and as a gift from the glorified Jesus. If any man is thirsty, if any man believes, if any man will "come to Me and drink", then he will receive rivers of living water from God. And the person will hear the word and know that He is indeed the Prophet. Here are margin references from my study bible. Isa 44:3, "For I will pour out water on the thirsty land And streams on the dry ground; I will pour out My Spirit [margin,or, spirit] on your offspring, And My blessing on your descendents; and they will spring up among the grass Like poplars by streams of water." Isaiah 55:1, "Ho, everyone who thirst, come to the waters;...Listen carefully to Me,...incline your ear and come to Me..." Isaiah 58:11, "And the Lord will continually guide you, And satisfy your desire in scorched places,..." Isaiah 49:10, "They will not hunger or thirst, Neither will the scorching heat or sun strike them down; For He who has compassion on them will lead them, And will guide them to springs of water." Revelation 7:17, "...for the Lamb in the center of the throne shall be their shepherd, and shall guide them to springs of the water of life;..." John 19:34, "...but one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately there came out blood and water." I think that the water comes from our Rock and not from ourselves. I think that the Spirit gives us the words to speak for they do not come from us. Ephesians 1:17, "...that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him." From the heart, Ray |

Greetings Ray! Thank you for the response and for quoting those verses! However, I still have not changed my stance on John 7:38 after reading them, even though I appreciate the study that we have undergone together. I believe that we are taking those verses completely out of their context when applying them to John 7:38, but I am saying this without wanting or trying to discourage you in your study, my friend. Please keep studying, and keep in mind the capitalization, if it indeed helps! But please remember that those verses are integral parts of the passages that they are located in, (they are located there for a 'reason' :-) ), and keep in mind the whole of Scripture, my friend! Blessings to you, Makarios |
