1 | ever neccessary/permissable to deceit? | Luke 24:31 | Morant61 | 79868 | ||
Greetings Tomsweetstir! Thanks for the kind words! :-) Allow me to make a couple of quick points! 1) My previous post was not intend just for you my friend. I just kind of jumped in at that point. So, I hope you didn't take it as a direct citicism of you my friend. I was just noting that in general, no one had really went to Scripture yet to see what it said about the topic. 2) Secondly, I don't see the example of the missionary as a lie or a deception. Someone walks in saying that they are going to kill all Americans, I don't have any obigation to volunteer that I am an American. :-) Now, if they were asked a direct question, I feel that the missionary would have had only two possible choices. They could refuse to respond, or they could respond truthfully. 3) Concerning Mark 1:5, I think that we start a dangerous precedent if we start limiting the words beyond what the text allows. It is indeed quite possible that 'everyone' came. Mt. 3:7 does mention that religious leaders coming as well. One must remember that John was not preaching salvation, but much like an OT prophet, he was preaching 'repentance' from the religious shape that Israel was in. Granted, there are cases in Scripture where hyperbole is used, but I'm not sure that Mark 1:5 is such an instance. Mark is very specific in noting where they came from. p.s. - Welcome to the forum! Tim, Thank you for your input. Many have used ... the examples in Scripture to justify their actions, but we don't know the whole situation, and I do not believe God rewarded their deceit or any sin. ... others, like Brother Andrew (the ends justified the means). I think of heroes, like Polycarp. Some were told they just had to go through the motions and not mean it when they said Cesaer is lord. They chose death. Could we. I fear since we Westerners have it easy and our culture teached situation ethics ... so we may do something that God does not approve. This thought just in ... Jesus said for us to hate our family (Luke 14:26), so the excuse of lying (a sin) so that an innocent lives, is not a valid excuse. Being a 'Nam vet, we were told to answer with our name, rank and serial number to any question. Searcher |
