1 | Does God endorse polygamy? | 1 Kin 11:3 | stjones | 68574
Hi, Don; If I am anti-intellectual by your standards, I will be happy to stand with 2,000 years of other anti-intellectuals who, like me, have failed to find in the Bible the same novel view of marriage that you have uncovered. You string words together well, but it will take more than cleverly worded speculation to overthrow two millenia of orthodox Christian thought. Incidentally, I suggested the passage in Proverbs because, having studied philosophy in both undergraduate and graduate school, I have learned some of the shortcomings of approaching the Bible as if it were just another text. Sometimes it's necessary to set the intellectualizing aside and simply listen to the Holy Spirit. The Bible isn't a philosophical work, it's the revealed wisdom of the God. Its goal is not to develop a system of metaphysics and ethics; its goal is to reveal the character of God and to bring people to faith in Jesus. Its purpose is spiritual, not intellectual. Its deepest meaning cannot be apprehended by mere human reason. See 1 Corinthians 2:6-16. Peace and grace, Steve aka Indiana Jones |

Howdy thar, Steve. If'n I was you, I wouldn't let that there talk about not being a intelleckual bother me a whole heap. Why, here in Arkansas a intelleckual is a feller what knows all 19 letters of the alfabet, and a snob is a dude that wears shoes even in the summertime. Some of the perfessers at the universcity knows their alfabet and so does some of these here modern high falutin preachers what calls theirself doctor, but most of 'em still don't have much to say that would be of any use to a feller, specially a Christian. God He says that our righteousness is like dirty old rags to Him, and I spect He don't cotton much to our intelleckualism neither. What I mean is I don't spect He's jest bowled over by how smart we think we are. No, down here in the Ozarks, not many of us folks is afflicted with having more brains than is good for us, but a lot of us do love the Lord and as for me, why I'll take that over having a over dose of the smarts any old day. Keep your head up high, cousin, and jest thank the Good Lord you ain't smart enough to figure out that the Bible don't even mean what it says as plain as day. And I ain't neither. --Hank

If we use this verse (1 Kings 11:3) to condone polygamy then couldn’t we use it to condone having concubines? I don’t think any of us would argue that point. Do we?

Hello, One. Oh, somebody probably will argue the point with all the wisdom they manage to muster to argue about almost everything. I think the best way to approach this ridiculous idea of polygamy that has been promulgated on this forum (not by you, I hasten to add) is by the use of humor. One day I heard a speaker tell of a sermon in which this verse, 1 Kings 11:3, was referenced, the preacher pointing out that King Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines, and added that Solomon probably pampered all of them, feeding them on milk and honey. After the sermon, a young man, father of 10 kids, stepped up and asked the preacher, "I'm not especially interested in what Solomon fed all his wives and concubines, but do you happen to know what He ate to give him all that stamina?"...... And, of course, if one uses 1 Kings 11:3 as his "proof text" to promote the biblical sanction of polygamy, he should be consistent and use Genesis 6:14 as his "proof text" to promote ark building among all true and obedient believers! I am not ridiculing your question, friend, not at all. What I am poking fun at is the ridiculous ideas that show up on this forum with the frequency of the rising of the sun. --Hank
