Bible Note: Hi Cuddle, I guess I didn’t get my thought across: sometimes I get my tongue in front of my eyeteeth and I can’t see what I’m trying to say. I’m not against singing by any stretch of the imagination; it’s just what I think has gone overboard in the way of too much singing, taking the place of good exegetical teaching of God’s Word. The verse you suggested, Matthew 26:30 And after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. This one verse doesn’t indicate that over half of Christ ministry, spent here on Earth, was dedicated to the practice of singing with the disciples. When they were finished they sang (A) song, indefinite article, meaning one. I guess I’m from the old school and I really can’t get into the modern “foot stompen, ge-tar twangen, clippoty cloppen, hand clapping stuff. I still get choked up when I hear, A Mighty Fortress Is Our God or The Battle Hymn of the Republic, Rock of Ages and such. I think we’re getting a little of course from the original thought but I have enjoyed venting in your direction and don’t let us old duffs slow you down! All of my kids, five of them from 37 to 48 are believers in Christ and their church services don’t edify me all that much when I visit. I think Paul might have forgotten to include song leaders in the following list; I jest! Ephes. 4:10-16 He who descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.) [11] And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, [12] for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; [13] until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fulness of Christ. [14] As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves, and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; [15] but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him, who is the head, even Christ, [16] from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by that which every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love. Again I hope you enjoy the forum and; 1 Thes. 5:21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. CDBJ |
