Bible Note: Hank: When American servicemen were in prisoner-of-war camps in Vietnam, Japan, and Nazi Germany, I wonder which search engine or online concordance they used. Of course, there were no online Bibles in those days. But, even if there were, prisoners of war would not have had access to them. No, Americans in prisoner-of-war camps and prisoners in the Russian gulag, China, Cuba, etc. had only those Scriptures they had memorized. Only those Scriptures. Furthermore, in the 1st century, 2nd century,...10th century and beyond, few, if any, individuals had their own personal copy of the Bible. Everyone having their own copy of the Bible is a very, very recent thing in the history of the church. Lightly dismissing memorization of Scripture (or reading through the Bible for that matter) is foolishness. This country has grown mentally lazy. Hank, remember the days when memorization was taught and practiced in the schools? We memorized everything from Kipling's "If" to Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. Grace and shalom, Kalos |
