Bible Note: ngkh - On not feeling the need to memorize Scripture: Apparently the Psalmist saw the need when he wrote, "Your word have I hidden in my heart that I might not sin against You." Obviously Jesus had committed Scripture to memory, as evidenced by the many times He quoted it. He quoted from Deuteronomy in response to each of the three temptations Satan placed before Him (Read from Matthew 4:1-11). The apostles quoted from Scripture numerous times. It is enlightening to comb through the New Testament with a view to marking the number of times the writers do quote from the Old Testament Scriptures. If Jesus and His disciples felt a need to "hide the word in their hearts" -- and it is clearly evident that they did -- then who are we to say that we feel no need to do likewise? To my way of thinking, there are two chief things that would keep a Christian from committing portions of God's word to memory, apathy or mental sloth, or possibly both. --Hank |
