Subject: purpose driven? |
Bible Note: Hi Steve! I wouldn't say that is wrong, but it is unusual! :-) Personally, I like the way that Saddleback Church does their membership covenants. They look at the people from several perspectives. They see some as being simply part of the crowd. These are people who are either simply visiting or who have not yet made a commitment to being a part of Saddleback. Obviously, not much is expected of this group. The next level is the congregation. These are the people who have accepted Christ and have made a commitment to being a part of the minsitry of Saddleback. These individuals sign a covenant to do several things, including; acting in love toward one another, refusing to gossip, following the leadership, praying for the church, inviting the unchurched to attend, welcoming visitors, serving one another, using one's gifts for ministry, attending faithfully, living a Godly life, and giveing regularly. The next level of people is the committed. These are members who have committed to being discipled. There is a different level of expectation for this group. The final level is the core. These are those mature, disciples of Christ who are using their gifts to serve and minister to others and who provide leadership for the church. So, in this context, the purpose of the covenants is one of accountability. While there certainly isn't any Bible verse that commands membership covenants, neither is there any Bible verse that forbids them! :-) Well, I need to get to bed my friend!
