AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 John 1:9 If we [freely] admit that we have sinned and confess our sins, He is faithful and just [true to His own nature and promises], and will forgive our sins and cleanse us continually from all unrighteousness [our wrongdoing, everything not in conformity with His will and purpose]. |
Bible Question:
Yes we to strive to live a sinliess life. God has given us a way out of temptation as the Bible says in 1Cor 10:13 “No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.” But who can live a sinless life? 1John 1:8 “If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us. “ Proverbs 20:9 “Who can say, "I have cleansed my heart, I am pure from my sin"? This question is not only a challenge to any man in the world to prove himself sinless, whatever he pretends, but a lamentation of the corruption of mankind, even that which remains in the best. Alas! Who can say, "I am sinless?’’ Observe, 1. Who the persons are that are excluded from these pretensions—all, one as well as another. Here, in this imperfect state, no person whatsoever can pretend to be without sin. Adam could say so in innocency, and saints can say so in heaven, but none in this life. Those that think themselves as good as they should be cannot, nay, and those that are really good will not, dare not, say this. 2. What the pretension is that is excluded. We cannot say, We have made our hearts clean. Though we can say, through grace, "We are cleaner than we have been,’’ yet we cannot say, "We are clean and pure from all remainders of sin.’’ Or, though we are clean from the gross acts of sin, yet we cannot say, "Our hearts are clean.’’ Or, though we are washed and cleansed, yet we cannot say, "We ourselves made our own hearts clean;’’ it was the work of the Spirit. Or, though we are pure from the sins of many others, yet we cannot say, "We are pure from our sin, the sin that easily besets us, the body of death which Paul complained of in (MH) Rom. 7:24. “O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?” Peace and Love bgg |
Bible Answer: When the book of Proverbs was written, Jesus Christ had not come yet therefore man had no way out of sin. In Rom 7:24, Paul speaks of the man he was before he became converted. This I know because Christ has already delivered believers from the body of this death. The body of this death is the power that death has over us through sin. If you noticed in Rom 7:24, Paul ask a question and then in the very next verse he answers the question. Paul clearly states the effect of living by the flesh. The body only wants to fullfill the desires of sin therefore it becomes enmity with the spirit. (Read Rom 8:1) There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, WHO WALK NOT AFTER THE FLESH, BUT AFTER THE SPIRIT. As long a we are in Christ and walk after the spirit then we are not condemned. Now notice in Rom 8:2 Paul states that the law of the SPIRIT of Life in Christ Jesus makes us free from the law of SIN and DEATH. Paul was a wretched man only when he followed the law which was handed down by Moses. This law Paul found that he could not keep as long as he was controled by his flesh. Rom 7:17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. Paul found out that we could no longer live in the flesh and please God at same time. Therefore he conclueded that we must live the spirit and only then could we resist sin. This can only be done by dying to sin. Rom 6:11 Likewise reckon you also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. The only way that we can be alive unto God is to be dead to sin. Now if we are dead to sin, can we continue to committ sin? Rom 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we CONTINUE in sin, that grace may abound? Rom 6:2 GOD FORBID. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? What Paul is saying is that after we have confess to be saved by Christ, what can we say about sin. Can we continue to sin and still grow in Christ or (Grace)? God said No. How is it possible to be dead to sin and still live in sin. When a person Physically dies, then he no longer lives in this world. Likewise when a person dies to sin, he no longer continues to sin. Paul clearly tells us to put away the sin that so easily besets us, not make excuses about it but put it away. According to the dictionary, Continue, applies to a process going on without ending. If a person has not yet stop sinning, then they continue to sin. Paul says that we cannot continue to sin and grow in Christ at the same time because God forbids it. So therefore a person has to either forsake sin and grow in Christ or forsake Christ and grow in sin. You quoted I John 1:8-10, but you have to go to IJohn 1:7 to find out why he makes this statement. John states in the 7th verse, that the blood of Jesus cleansest us from all sin. In Proverbs Jesus had not died so therefore during that period they were not clean from their sin. In IJohn 1:8, John ask them if they could say that they had no sin for the blood of Christ to clean them from. Now I ask you, can any man in this world say that he doesn't have to be cleansed by the blood of Jesus? If any man says this then he is deceiving himself and the truth is not in him. Rather we all have to be cleaned by the blood of Jesus. Read IJohn 1:9. Once we confess our sins, then Christ is faithful and just enough to forgive us and in return Christ cleans us from all unrightousness. If Christ cleans us from ALL unrightousness, then how can we continue to live unrightous? Now if we continue to live unrightous then Christ has not cleaned us from all unrightousness but rather some. IJohn 2:1,2 can be explained in Heb 10:26. IJohn 3:6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him. You might not believe this bbg but everyone that has been born of God starts as a new born baby. Just as an earthly baby grows and matures, likewise are Saints suppose to grow and mature. As we mature every Saint should work toward perfection. This is the mark for the prize that Paul speaks of obtaining in Christ Jesus in Phil. 3:14. This is why Paul states that this is a High Calling. Phil. 3:15 Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be OTHERWISE MINDED, GOD shall reveal even this unto you. |
