Bible Note: Dear lightedsteps, Pastor Beja has answered well. He certainly says things much more clearly than I usually do. I appreciate his participation. I will also respond to your questions. Perhaps the two responses will be helpful. 1) Over the centuries, Christians have made an attempt to build a Regula Fidei (Rule of Faith). Generally, however, the truth surfaces as the church deals with heresy. Of course, that is precisely what the Scriptures tell us (Matthew 18:7; 1 Corinthians 11:19; 2 Corinthians 13:5-7; 1 John 2:19). Consequently, you can trace these efforts through creeds and confessions. See, for example, the Didache, the Apostle's Creed, the Athanasian Creed, the Definition of Chalcedon, the Canons of the Council of Orange, etc. Regarding error and correctness in the congregations, my own confession (1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith) puts it this way: "The purest churches under heaven are subject to mixture and error (1 Cor. 5:1-13; Rev. 2:1-29; 3:1-22); and some have so degenerated as to become no churches of Christ, but synagogues of Satan (Rev. 18:2; 2 Thess. 2:11-12); nevertheless Christ always hath had, and ever shall have a kingdom in this world, to the end thereof, of such as believe in Him, and make profession of His name (Matt. 16:18; Psa. 72:17; 102:28; Rev. 12:17)." (chapter 22, paragraph 3) 2) Based on what I know of you from the forum, I would have to say no to "Christendom" -- that's a broader definition that might even include some cults; and a qualified maybe to "the Christian Faith." Generally, most people do not understand what doctrines are essential, nor how they ought to be derived. I apologize, but I will resume answering your questions soon. Thank you for your patience.
