NASB | 1 Corinthians 14:1 Pursue love, yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Corinthians 14:1 Pursue [this] love [with eagerness, make it your goal], yet earnestly desire and cultivate the spiritual gifts [to be used by believers for the benefit of the church], but especially that you may prophesy [to foretell the future, to speak a new message from God to the people]. |
Bible Question: Why does it say in 1 Cor 14: 2 For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit. |
Bible Answer: 1 Cor 14:4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. KJV Speaking in tongues is always speaking to God including the interpretation of it if done. This verse here says that speaking in tongues edifies the one doing it. Paul does go on to say that speaking in tongues without the intrepretation of it does not edify the church simply because people do not understand the message because they don't know the language. But speaking in tongues in your own private prayer life will edify (build you up spiritually)you. |
