AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Corinthians 11:5 And every woman who prays or prophesies when she has her head uncovered disgraces her head; for she is one and the same as the woman whose head is shaved [in disgrace]. |
Bible Question: I did state that this is a difficult passage to interpret. I was offering my view and my reason for that view. I do not claim to have all truth or revelation. There is much about the Bible that I do not know. But I do believe in intrepreting the passages that seem 'more obscure' based upon passages that are clearer. I do agree, obviously, that 1 Cor 11:10 says, 'because of the angels.' Where I'm 'fuzzy' is, what does that mean? Paul doesn't explain it. Yes, 1 Pet 1:12 does say that angels long to look into these things (our redemption) but I don't have a firm grasp as to the meaning. And though we may respect Charles Ryrie as a great theologian, his commentary is not divinely inspired. Do you believe that women should keep completely silent in the church building i.e. no talking, no singing, no teaching Sunday School? Where does it say in scripture that the angels are offended and what the repurcusions of that are? |
Bible Answer: I see no place where women can not sing during the worship services-women can not teach men-but I see nothing wrong for women to teach younger children-the elders of the church should teach the oldier children (ages 13 on up). Angels come to know God by His works-the greatest work is the Church-the Work of Salvation-by the work of redemption God is revealing Himself to the elect angels-they see His divine attributes displayed in the salvation of the elect (Ephesians 3:10 "to the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places") Are angels offened when women have their heads uncovered during the worship services?-1 Cor.11:10 "For this reason the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels" we must realize that in our worship services not only is God present but angels-therefore women should not act in a way that would disrupt the order of worship-offend God or His angels-they must remain in their submissive role-we must first interpret these verses in their context which remains for us unknown-I recommend one read modern commentaries on First Corinthians like Thiselton's commentary on First Corinthians or Raymond F. Collins commentary on First Corinthians. I do not think one should from these verses force women to wear hats during church services. |
