AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 16:24 ¶ Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone wishes to follow Me [as My disciple], he must deny himself [set aside selfish interests], and take up his cross [expressing a willingness to endure whatever may come] and follow Me [believing in Me, conforming to My example in living and, if need be, suffering or perhaps dying because of faith in Me]. |

Bible Note: Dear Buz, I do not find any commandment in Scripture requiring that a person should "slay the old self." This is not an act that any of us could do. Instead, it is something that God has done. What we are commanded to do is to "put off" the old man and "put on" the new man (Ephesians 4:22-24). However, I'm not entirely convinced that all of these metaphors are perfectly interchangeable. They are mentioned in different contexts. In Him, Doc |
