AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 16:24 ¶ Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone wishes to follow Me [as My disciple], he must deny himself [set aside selfish interests], and take up his cross [expressing a willingness to endure whatever may come] and follow Me [believing in Me, conforming to My example in living and, if need be, suffering or perhaps dying because of faith in Me]. |
Bible Question (short): Are you His disciple? |
Question (full): Ref ID# 170716 ... One part of this verse that is often missed is the word "Then" ... the previous verses (21- 23), where Jesus predicted his death, then Peter put his foot in his mouth and Jesus rebuked him. The Amplified does well on deny himself ... it is what Jesus did (Php 2:5-8) ... we need to say not my will, but Yours (Mat 26:39). Taking up the cross ... means to follow Hin in death. This phrase is misapplied to mean something else. Are you willing to give up all your rights (deny self) including be willing to die for Him (take up the cross) ... following His example ... to be a disciple. If you don't - are you His disciple? |
